missing-box turns pink for some students but not for others

When I mark an assignment missing, the box turns pink for some students but not for others. This started happening about a month ago. On the same assignment, the box will turn pink for one student, but not for another when I mark them both missing. This makes it hard to identify who has missing assignments when looking at the gradebook for the whole class.

Thank you for contacting the Instructure Community. We're sorry to hear you've been experiencing issues with missing statuses. Are you assignments assigned to 'everyone' or are you singling out individual students or sections? You can check by going to edit assignment and looking at the "assign to" box at the bottom. If you are opting to single out students or groups please make sure that everyone has been accounted for. If the default 'everyone' option is there that is strange behavior. You should be able to manually give any student a missing status in the gradebook. It may your internet browser and we recommend clearing the cache and cookies or trying another browser.
