I don't have another place to put this, but FYI the +/- tool in the RCE in the 7/16 deploy notes changes the editor in increments too small to be helpful. This might need to be tested a little more fully before being rolled out. Good idea, though!

I totally agree, I was expecting each click to change the RCE height by 50-100 pixels.

I also note that while the buttons are available in the RCE for pages, I don't see them in the RCE for discussions.

I just checked and it appears that the "+" and "-" icons now appear in more locations. I checked for assignments, discussions (and replies), announcements (if/when allowed, and replies), quizzes (and questions), and new quizzes (and questions).

From my quick testing, the only types of content that did not include the "+" and "-" icons were new quizzes and questions in new quizzes.

I would also agree that I expected the +/- to make more of a significant change in expanding the size of the RCE. I suppose the smaller change allows for a more specific resizing, but would still benefit from increasing that change a bit more each time the button is clicked.

Also, good catch, @chriscas ! It looks like the buttons are also missing in announcements (makes sense if it's missing in discussions), new quizzes, and text entry assignments (only for students if Assignment Enhancements is turned on).

Yeah, the +/- button definitely needs to be adjusted to increment/decrement more, especially with larger screens. Not sure if it's feasible, but is there a way to make it so that the +/- buttons adjust how much they increment/decrement proportional to the viewport size? I can see on a smaller screen that the current adjustments would work well but on a larger screen it's painful to resize using those buttons.

I did took three screenshots of my use of the "+" and "-" icons.

1. a "before" of the textbox
2. an "after" of the textbox when clicking on the "+" icon
3. an "after" of the textbox when clicking on the "-" icon (when at the original textbox size)

I then cropped each screenshot so that it was automatically sized ("Image > "Crop to content" option in Gimp) to only be the size of the textbox.

The height of the original textbox was 636 pixels. The height of the textbox after clicking on the "+" icon was 646. The height of the textbox after clicking on the "-" icon (when at the original textbox size) was 626.

Based on that,  the "+" and "-" icons increase or decrease the height of the textbox by only 10 pixels.

For these two icons to be useful (especially since the size does not seem to be remembered), the incremental difference to be at least 50 pixels.  My opinion would be 100 pixels but I understand that could be too much of a difference for smaller screen sizes.

By introducing the + and - buttons, is Instructure planning to remove the original RCE resize icon (originally mentioned in the 5/21 deploy) or will we still have the benefit of using the original icon indefinitely?

That's a good question! It looks like based on what I see in Beta that the draggable element is still there.
