I noticed in my testing that it doesn't display when assignment enhancements are turned on in a course. It is this on assignment enhancements team radar?

Hi, @snugent. We do have this on our radar and will work to have it available with Assignment Enhancements enabled as soon as possible. More to come as we get the project scoped and the work completed.

@snugent, just a quick update on your question - the update to make Immersive Reader available with Assignment Enhancements enabled is nearly complete. We intend to make it available in our November 10 deploy. This is also documented in my recent blog update in the Assignment Enhancements User group.

Hi there, this looks good. Back when it was first released, why was it made optional at an institutional level and not enforced? I'm trying to understand the history of it. Was there hesitation for any specific reason?

@kirsten_ryall, Canvas/Instructure might be able to provide more detail or an exact reason but I believe the original hesitation was because it is a Microsoft feature and Microsoft could have removed its functionality or restrict it to only organizations that were Microsoft customers.

I'm not seeing the Immersive Reader button in our Canvas for Elementary courses, anywhere...not on regular pages or any of the new locations. It is showing up in classic Canvas courses.

Hey @audra_agnelly ! When you look at a page in C4E, there's not an Immersive Reader button up in the top right anywhere?

Ok, sorry, I am seeing it on regular pages, and I am seeing it on assignments, as long as they are not an External Tool assignment which was what I was looking at earlier. Did I miss that limitation in the documentation? I wouldn't expect the embedded 3rd party content to work, but was expecting the teacher's assignment details show up in Immersive Reader.

In C4E, I am not seeing the IR button on the course Homepage. When I toggle my sandbox between subaccounts, the button is there in Classic Canvas but not C4E:

I am a foreign language teacher and I am very concerned about the students being able to access this feature while taking a quiz. If I create a quiz in which I ask students to translate something to demonstrate their understanding of the language, they can click on a button and the program will do it for them. This is just cheating. I understand that this is a helpful feature to support ELL students or students with special abilities, but this is not helpful when the students need to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a target language. I am really hoping you give the teachers the option to enable and/or disable the Immersive Reader feature for quizzes.

Hi @rossiai

Immersive Reader is not available in Quizzes. More info has been posted by our product manager here: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/The-Product-Blog/Microsoft-Immersive-Reader-in-More-of-Canvas/ba-...

Thanks,

Erin

Thank you, Erin. I know that. But the video describing the feature indicates that it will be roll out for Assignments pretty soon. Also, the creator of the video, David Lyons, indicates that "this is not coming to discussions or quizzes just yet. We are having a discussion in the community about the security and the integrity..." So, I am trying to be part of the discussion. This is the link to the video.

Again. This is a helpful tool, but I don't think it is a good idea to have it on quizzes. This is not good if a student is taking a test for his/her Spanish class, French class, etc.

It would be great if the teachers have the ability to turn the feature on/off in their own courses. It would be even better if the teachers are able to turn the feature on for specific students, as needed.

Thank you so much,

I agree. I think teachers should have the ability to turn it on and off for Quizzes. I could see in an elementary classroom where having it on would be super helpful and even possibly an accommodation for a student on an IEP. But for times like the example given in the original post, it would be detrimental to have it turned on.

Do you have to enable it? I don't see it on a page that only has text on it.

You should be able to enable the Immersive Reader for yourself in your Profile > Settings as described in the deploy notes.
