Allow Users to Set Enhanced Rubric Default View to Horizontal

Description:
Please add an account- or course-level setting in Canvas that allows administrators or instructors to set the default view of enhanced rubrics to horizontal rather than the current default (traditional).

Why This Matters:
The horizontal view provides a clearer, more streamlined experience when grading, especially for rubrics with many criteria. Currently, graders must manually switch views each time, which adds unnecessary clicks and slows down the workflow. Allowing a default setting would improve efficiency and consistency across courses.

Proposed Solution:

• Add a setting in Account Settings or Course Settings to choose the default rubric layout (horizontal or vertical).

• Allow instructors to override the account-level default if desired.

• Preserve user preferences across courses to reduce unnecessary mouse clicks.

This improvement would enhance grading workflows and support a smoother instructor experience.

Yes please! When I do trainings for our teachers, I try to advocate for using these other views, but it just sounds stupid when they find out they have to switch it every time lol. 

Also, if they do this, they need to display the points on each option instead of 1, 2, 3, 4!

Thanks for sharing. Having to switch the rubric view every time can definitely slow things down. A default view setting is something we’re actively considering for our next phase of Enhanced Rubrics, and the flexibility you described (account- or course-level defaults with instructor overrides) lines up well with the kinds of improvements we’re exploring. I'm just starting to familiarize myself with Enhanced Rubrics, so I apologize for what may seem like a dumb question.  I don't understand why there is both a Horizontal and a Vertical view.  The difference between them seems trivial, and if that is the case others, like me, may feel confused by the selection.  And while on the subject, I wonder if there is not a better name that could be applied than Horizontal.  Compared to the Traditional View, the Horizonal View looks vertical.  "Column View" perhaps?

I was also thinking about this today as I used rubrics. There really shouldn't even be any options. There should just be one view that is actually good. It should be something that fits in the grading pane without left/right scrolling and displays all relevant information, like the point values for each selection.

@Seangt @hesspe Thanks for sharing this, we really appreciate the feedback. We're actively working on a layout update that reflects what you're both describing. The new vertical design is meant to reduce horizontal scrolling and make sure all the key info, like point values, is easy to see right in the grading pane. More improvements coming soon!
