In reviewing the 9/24 deploy we were interested to see the score mismatch alert item. However, based on our testing of how this feature actually works, I'd like to suggest that this warning is too little, too late in the grading process for faculty. I was able to create a rubric for an assignment and save it with the point mismatch without getting any message of an issue. Most instructors would create an assignment, create a rubric (or associate an existing rubric with the assignment), and consider themselves done with the process. Even when I then submitted on behalf of a student and graded the assignment with the rubric, there still wasn't a warning that this rubric didn't match the assignment point value. I could only get the warning to trigger when I edited a criterion on an existing rubric (when attached to an assignment).
For this update to be meaningful, the point value mismatch warning should be present in more places in the assignment setup and grading process.
Agreed, and I will add one specific workflow where the mismatch alert does not come up (also posted this message to the 2025-09-24 Deploy Q&A😞
While validating the Assignment and Points Mismatch Alert in production, I noticed that a rubric that already had the "Use this rubric for assignment grading" enabled would not generate the alert. The steps to replicate are:
It seems the alert is only triggered when the setting is first applied, but there will be many instructors and course administrators who will be reusing legacy rubrics that have been converted to the enhanced version.
@abbyrosensweig @paulamiranda Thank you for sharing! We definitely want to provide the best experience possible, so your input is greatly appreciated. I can put in a bug ticket for the alert when using legacy rubric, and we can certainly consider adding the alert elsewhere when necessary.
