I've been testing the Enhanced Rubrics feature preview and discovered a significant issue with point values that requires immediate attention. Here is a YouTube video demonstrating the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTW_Qbks4Ho
When working with multiple criteria in an enhanced rubric, point values inconsistently revert between custom values and defaults:
This inconsistency appears triggered when switching between editing different criteria and makes creating reliable rubrics impossible.
Has anyone else noticed this particular issue?
Thank you,
Cheryl
Cheryl,
Our institution is experiencing the same problem with changing values and the total value not changing properly. We are also seeing problems when changing values from a small point rating like 4,3,2,1,0 to a larger point value like 10,8,7,4,3 if there is already a number that is being used like 3 this example it will not let us change a larger values properly from large to small. The only way to do it is to start from the lowest value up.
Hi Cheryl,
I was able to replicate the issue you were experiencing. I added three criterion to my rubric and before I saved, I switched between the criterion and the points possible was not displaying correctly for each criterion. What I did to fix it was, save the rubric (Click the Create Rubric button) and did I hard-refresh (keyboard shortcut: ctrl + shift + r). The hard refresh forces your browser to reload the page by clearing its cache and fetching the latest version from the server, that seem to have fixed it for me. Hopefully that helps.
I appreciate your insights. At the same time, I hope they plan to fix this issue and don't rely on us to work around the problem. It would be nice if it just worked without the additional steps that aren't meant to be part of the workflow.
Hello,
I wanted to follow up on the ongoing issues with Enhanced Rubrics that I've previously reported. The functionality problems persist as of today, May 29, 2025.
I've documented the current state of the issue in an updated video showing point values continuing to revert to default settings: https://youtu.be/kOc7pphIUvY
This is the same behavior I initially reported in March and have been tracking since I first test it in November 2024. Given that this feature is in production and these issues affect the reliability of rubric scoring, I'm hoping to get an update on when these issues might be resolved.
Could someone from the Canvas team provide insight into whether this issue is on the development roadmap for an upcoming fix? Is there an estimated timeframe for resolution?
Given the length of time this has persisted and its impact on usability, I would greatly appreciate a response from the Canvas team. I will not be recommending the use of this update at our institution until the issues are addressed.
Best regards,
Cheryl
Hi @cheryltice,
Thanks for following up and for sharing the updated video, it's really helpful. We’ve documented the issue (thanks to your initial post :)) and appreciate you flagging it again. We've shared this bug with the engineering team and plan to fix it in this upcoming iteration of Enhanced Rubrics. We’ll keep you posted as we make progress.
Thanks!
Yasi
