Advising & Outreach with Canvas: 4 Semesters Later

What's more student-centered than advising? For four semesters, we've run a grant-funded pilot to make Canvas a place for students to find support, not just course assignments. I'll share four semesters' worth of experience, data, and trends, as well as feedback from both advisers and advisees.

Awesome session  @G_Petruzella ​. I will share this with our counselors. I was wondering if students got confused when the counselors used assignments for the advising. Did counselors put due dates on these assignments so they showed up on the calendar and to do list?

Hi snugent​ -

Thanks! I'm glad you found it interesting. The advisors did put due dates on the "Assignments"; they generally found it useful to give students a target date so that they wouldn't be rushing about with forms in the week before registration began (or in some cases, even after).

I didn't hear any feedback about using Assignments being a confusing practice for students; the advisors tended to do a lot of outreach at the beginning of the semester, to make clear the role of this particular Canvas "course".

Thanks for getting back with me  @G_Petruzella ​. That was helpful. This has been discussed before on our campus but we held back because of notifications and the potential of confusing students. Your presentation shows it can work and has some great benefits as well.
