This will be a true escape the room experience housed within a Canvas course. What happens if you don't escape in time? No big deal! You will have access to the course after the session and can escape whenever you want.
The course for this session will be housed within resources.instructure.com. If you do not have an account for this instance of Canvas, you can save time by creating an account before this session. (Make sure to remember your password!) |
What will you experience when you attend?
Benefits of escaping:
Your choice regarding ways to participate in the escape:
However you decide to participate is entirely up to you. No matter what, you should be able to experience features within Canvas while also learning about the Canvas community.

Hello @jhough ! Yes it is planned for a breakout session. It is currently planned for Thursday, July 26, 2018 3:25 PM - 4:05 PM. Guess I should have put that in the blog post, huh?
Lol! It's all good. I know that session caught my attention and I'm pretty
sure I marked it. See you there! Super excited!

I realized I did not answer your second question @jhough . Sorry! Canvas.net and resources.instructure.com appear to be two different instances of Canvas. I have accounts on both and when I log in I see two entirely different sets of courses. If you do not have an account at resources.instructure.com you may want to create an account there too.
Do you have any thoughts on this stefaniesanders?
So excited about this! I think Escape Rooms are so neat. Is this a breakout session? I see that I can enroll on Cavnas.net, is that all I need to do?
Thank you!

@ryan_corris and @jhough , the Canvas.net domain is exclusively for Canvas Network MOOC offerings—so yes, Jennifer, to participate in Ryan's Escape the Room adventure, please create an account at resources.instructure.com.
Thanks stefaniesanders! And now we know the difference.
Thank you!

I really want to try this in a hybrid course. I think it would be exciting to see how students would react.
Hey @jrboek ! A great thing about this is that there are so many different techniques you can incorporate into this type of activity. You can also plan it for a relatively short period of time or something that could potentially take days or even weeks depending on your learning goals and timelines. I am hoping to spark some interest and be able to get some wheels turning for people to see how this might be adapted for their classroom settings.
Sign me up! I'm in resources and ready to go!
Great! Looking forward to meeting you!
Fascinating way to demonstrate some of the functionalities of Canvas. Escape rooms are fun and quite popular right now too.
Maybe I am overlooking it but I did not see this session listed at the time indicated on the Mobile App schedule. Just wondering if it got moved or renamed.
tellison, I still see this session listed on the web agenda at the same date and time, but I don't see it at all on the app. I'll do some checking.
stefaniesanders thanks for looking into this. Just setting up the app and gearing up for the conference!!! Wasn't sure if this was a magic trick or not.
Hey tellison! Thanks for the heads up. I will see what I can find out as well. I am not seeing it in my app either.
@ryan_corris thank you very much
@ryan_corris and @sanders3 thank you very much. It is there and now added to my schedule!
Thanks tellison! I look forward to meeting you!
Signed-up and ready to go!
Nice to know you will be there @kona since your blog post on Hacking Mastery Paths was what inspired the Mastery Paths "twist" in this session. I look forward to meeting you.
Definitely interested in this session!
Hey Ryan
This looks amazing. Can I play this virtually?
I am sadly not at instructurecon this year
Gideon
Hello @GideonWilliams ! Definitely! I will direct message you with access information. Don't want to post it here before the session. 🙂
Hey Ryan! Hope the session went well! Waiting with baited breath for the update with access!
Thank you so much for this presentation and demo! I know it must have taken a lot of work on your part and everyone was anxious to get to the next session. But I spent time on the way home and still thinking about how to best make your idea into something we can use here for our faculty PD and new student orientation to Canvas! So your time was definitely not wasted!
Thank you again!
Cheers,
Beth Crook
Thank you for the kind words @BethCrook ! It makes me very happy to know that you are still thinking about this! Let me know if you have any questions or there is anything I can do to help.
Yes! Same for us. We're already figuring out how to use this with our Summer Institute classes in a couple of weeks. Thank you so much! Fantastic!
I love to hear this @jhough ! If you have the opportunity, I would love an update after the fact to see how everything goes when you try this.
Now that the session is over, here is some information that might be helpful.
I would also like to send a shout out to stefaniesanders for creating the initial course in resources.instructure.com so I would have a place to develop this course, Deactivated user for patiently answering all of my questions prior to Instructurecarn, and heidiadams for working with me on this endeavor and eventually presenting with me. I would also like to say thank you to Lakota Local Schools (my place of employment) for deciding that canvas was/is the best LMS for our school district and for the support that allowed me to attend Instructurecon.
If you do something like this with your students and/or staff, I would love to hear some details.
Good luck!
You're welcome, and thank you for your awesomeness, @ryan_corris !
To sign up for resources.instructure.com, it is asking for a Join Code? What would this be?
Hey @studentsupport ! If you go to tinyurl.com/canvescape and you do not have an account it will prompt you to create one. If you do have an account, you should be able to sign in there and it should take you to the course. Please let me know if this works.
Hi @ryan_corris thank you for sharing this class!
The link you provided doesn't go to a live page. Is there another link to use?
Thanks!
Hey @DeletedUser and @ryan_corris . I can tell what happened. If a URL doesn't have "http://" on it, this Community platform thinks it is a relative URL. Ryan, I hope you don't mind, I took the liberty of fixing the link. Terre, give it a try now.
That worked!
Thanks awilliams.
Ryan
Just finished this - Wow, what an amazing piece of work. Loved it! It must have taken ages!
The gamified approach works really well with the mix of challenges leading to the understanding of more features. Really liked the Mastery Paths feature and the hack element that allowed you to go back to it each time. Took me a little time as I might have competitively ticked Yes for all 3 answers at the beginning!
Loved the emojis - really brings the Modules and activities to life and breaks up the text. Also thought the quiz answer by posting the URL was a great idea - can see how that would work well with webquests. Super to see you trying out some different HTML approaches and the work on the Tabbed page is really impressive. I liked the Hint buttons too. I do wish there were some other bits of HTML that might improve the their design (instead of that large x in the pop up window)
Some thoughts for going on - only for you to have a play!
Many thanks for sharing this with me outside of the conference
Gideon
