UPDATE: Our two students had moved from one section to another within this one course so they had completed enrollments in the original section and active in the current section. Using the SIS import, I deleted the enrollments for both students from both sections, then re-activated them in their current section. This seems to have resolved our issue although it's not clear why the issue happened in the first place.
Could it be that the teacher, instead of assigning to an entire section or course, assigned to individual students and then neglected to give the individual students a specific due date?
I don't think so... it started happening yesterday and to a number of teachers at different grade levels and schools.

Hi Jennifer. For some reason I'm not able to view the image you attached (returns an error message when I click on it) but the description sounds like a problem that popped up for us on Monday. One of our teachers cannot enter a grade for two students for 2 assignments. All other students and assignments are fine. The tool-tip for one of the grey boxes says "This submission is in another grading period." The tool-tips for the other grey boxes say "This submission is not in any grading period."
I currently have a ticket open with support (Randolph School case #02512140). The agent asked us to add another "Assign To" block to the assignment for "Everyone Else". That did not resolve the problem. I am waiting for additional suggestions from them.

Hi @jcrawford ~ I shared your question with the entire Canvas Community by linking it to Find Answers. I hope that's okay with you! The share should increase the number of Community members who can comment and collaborate.
Were you able to find a solution for this?
Thank you for this update, Mary. I'm going to assume that you rooted out the cause of the behavior Jennifer first posed the question about, along with the workaround you described. For now I will mark your reply as the correct answer. If you have more info, please share. Marking the question as answered won't prevent other people from finding it or commenting but it will help us know which questions still need answers.
I had the same problem and the assignment was set to be due at 11:59pm. I switched the due time to 3pm and it fixed the issue. Hope this helps.
