We are happy to announce a fresh new look for your Studio Media Library, launching January 6th, 2025.  This release will be packed with improvements and new tools to make managing your videos easier than ever, and it will prepare us to accelerate some of the upcoming enhancements we are working on:

  • The ability to archive and delete media content at the user and account levels
  • Pinning videos for quicker access
  • Institution-wide video libraries accessible to everyone at an institution

These improvements will empower Canvas Studio users to more effectively manage their media content, whether at scale at the enterprise level or for day-to-day video learning.  Keep your eyes out for additional updates about these enhancements, as well as other video quizzing enhancements coming throughout 2025.

We want to give you plenty of time to adjust to the new Library experience. That’s why, until the end of March 2025, you can opt-out of this change by going to Settings in Studio and using the toggle under the Interface section - as demonstrated at the end of the video below.

Hi @AkosFarago!

I am looking forward to these! Great work by you and your team!

For the "Media Type" filter, will there be a way to filter by video content that was created using "Screencast-o-Matic" or "Studio Capture"?

For the "Media Type" filter, will there be an option for audio content?

Thank you!

Can you please make sure that all of this is documented in the list of Canvas Studio Releases at https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Studio-Releases/tkb-p/studio-release?

Can you provide some detail about the "Institution-wide video libraries" mentioned in the text above the video? I didn't see that explained in the video itself, but that's a function I've been hoping for in Studio for quite a while now...

@dbrace, release notes will be published today, or at the latest on Monday! For the time being, all uploaded media and recordings (both Screencast-o-matic and Studio Capture) will be considered as Studio content. We will monitor usage and feedback and if this needs to be further split up.

@dgray, institution-wide video libraries are coming later in 2025, that's why it was not explained further in the video. This is going to be another space where you can share and access video content and is available for a greater audience. It might be configurable by Administrators so there is a space for everyone at the institution, another one for all educators etc. Let us reach out to you when we explore this solution (possibly around summer), we would be happy to hear your feedback!

Hey @AkosFarago ,

I'd like to first off say that you and your team did outstanding work on this! We're so excited to use all of these features.

However, one thing that I found interesting was that I am unable to move videos that are in a course collection over to My Library, and vise versa. Will this be something that becomes available in the future?

Best!

Thank you for this. Unfortunately, however, I've run into an issue. How do I move a file from one of my Course Collections to My Library?

I have a video file in a course collection (multiple actually) that I'm trying to move into a new course, but the "move" option is not offered. I'm realizing the "move" option is only listed for videos in My Library. So, how do I get the video file into My Library?

Hi @NoahBoswell and @WinnCollier,

Unless I am miss understanding you and @AkosFarago (or someone else) may have a better answer, it is my understanding that while it is possible (but not usually recommended) to add media to a course collection it is not possible to move it out of a course collection (more on a workaround later).

Typically, you add media to either a "regular" collection or leave it unfiled in your "My Library". Then, when (if, since you do not need to) you use (embed using the Studio LTI tool) the media in a piece of content in a specific course shell (e.g. adding it to a Canvas page, a copy or (more preciously using Studio terminology) a "perspective" or "link" to the original is made in a course collection.

I believe there are other reasons but the primary reason this happens is so that the different copies ("perspectives" or "links") have analytics (or "insights") that are separate from each other and specific to each course shell.

I hope my explanation is accurate and makes sense. If it is not, I apologize and maybe @AkosFarago (or someone else) will have a better answer.

@dbrace ,

I completely understand what you are saying, and now thinking back, I think you're correct that you were always unable to move content out of course collections, and your reasoning with the insights and views make sense, and I'm pretty sure you're also correct on that based off of my experience.

I've used collections a lot in the past, as I am a very organized person, and I guess I've never tried moving media out of a course collection. I've deleted media, but never moved it.

I appreciate that!

You are welcome, @NoahBoswell.

I also apologize because I forgot to include my workaround.

If you have media that is in a course collection that you want to move to a regular collection or back to "My Library", I believe you will need to:

  1. download the media to your computer (How do I download media files or media transcript files in Canvas Studio? - Instructure Community - ...)
  2. if applicable, download the transcript to your computer (How do I download media files or media transcript files in Canvas Studio? - Instructure Community - ...)
  3. upload the downloaded video to "My Library" or into your regular collection (How do I upload media files in my Canvas Studio account? - Instructure Community - 1705 )
  4. upload the downloaded transcript (the guide below calls it a captions file)
    1. wait for Canvas to process the transcript again and then edit/publish it (How do I add auto-generated captions to my media file in Canvas Studio? - Instructure Community - 49...)
    2. How do I upload a caption file in Canvas Studio? - Instructure Community - 1702
  5. if desired, download the CSV of the insights for the original media
    1. DISCLAIMER: the details in the CSV file are not a full representation of what can be seen within the UI of Canvas Studio
    2. How do I export Canvas Studio viewer analytics as a CSV file? - Instructure Community - 517537
  6. if desired, delete the original media (How do I delete a Canvas Studio video quiz? - Instructure Community - 598012 )

While this is not the same as moving the file, it is the only option (at least currently) that Canvas Studio offers.

@dbrace I appreciate you sharing your work around, thank you! I will consider this next time I run into an issue like this.
