Improvements are coming for Item Banks Management this March.

We’re continuing to make adjustments to Item Banks based upon your feedback. During our user interviews for migration of Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes, it became clear we need ways to improve the experience when there are many pages of Item Banks.

The verbiage of several item bank filter names are changing to more clearly indicate what will be returned in those filters.

Current

Changed to

Purpose

All My Banks

All Banks

Every bank the signed in user has access to. The filter shows all banks the user has created as well as all shared to the user, both directly and through shared via course.

*Use this in conjunction with search and sorting options to narrow

All My Course Banks

Banks Shared to Course

Banks shared to courses are accessible by all teachers in the course.

*Use this filter when you have item banks shared to all the teachers in a course and wish to use in another course

As all migrated question banks are automatically shared with the teachers of the course they are used in, making these easier for all to find is a priority.

A new filter will be introduced as the default filter when navigating to an Item Bank from within a course. “This Course” filter will show any Item Banks used in the course which the logged in user has permission to see (share settings of view or edit). This will make it easier to quickly find and make any adjustments to the Item Banks which are being used for a quiz in the course.

Can someone explain the "This Course" filter--what does it show when selected?

This Course is supposed to show you banks created/used within a given course. Currently, it is mainly the same as Banks Shared to Course. I have written in about this and been told, "Due to some issues in the original release the work being done was disabled ad they are investigating solutions." I was told to track this at https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Releases-Q-A/Releases-Q-amp-A-2022-04-16-New-Quizzes-This-.... Five months to the day from me initially reporting this issue, there is no sign of a fix.

I recently wrote in again about This Course not working. When I asked them to either remove the broken filter or update their documentation to indicate that it is not working correctly, they wrote, "you may want to raise this on new idea conversations". 🤔

Also, Banks Shared to Course seems to be broken. When I use that filter, I see every bank shared with any course in which I am a teacher. Even if I build a new course shell, I can find banks listed under that filter in that brand new space. So far, the L1 support refuses to acknowledge this issue despite me sharing two videos of the issue.

To enable "This Course" filtering, some significant changes needed to happen on the backend of our New Quizzes. These changes take time to architect, implement, and build. However, they position New Quizzes to iterate more effectively on future changes beyond Course filter.

The intention of this filter was to show any Item Banks used in this course which the logged in user has permission to see.  In other words, in the course that the user is currently in, which item banks are being used in that course, including those that are shared to this course specifically.

At the moment, the "This Course" filter shows any Item Banks that are shared to this course.  For now, the functionality that we pulled back was for the part of the filter to show what was used in this course.  It's important to note that the difference between “This Course” filter and “Banks Shared to Course” is that “Banks Shared to Course” shows all banks shared to ANY course - not just this course.

As noted previously, we pulled back full functionality of this filter to do some performance improvements, once functionality to show USED in this course is ready, we will post an update in our New Quizzes Hub.

@MPioRoda https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-manage-item-banks-in-New-Quizzes/ta-p/1... indicates that Banks Shared to Course are "question banks shared with the course". Where does the documentation point to that filter showing all banks shared to ANY course? I mean, why would someone even want a filter that did that? I can see wanting to go through all of the banks shared to a specific course (Banks Shared to Course) and wanting to see banks created or used in a course (This Course), but a filter that shows me any banks that have been shared with any course?!

Everything about this is so utterly confusing. This Course shows nothing unless you share a bank to a course, but I can't figure out anything you gain by doing so.

I have a teacher who has built several hundred item banks in a sandbox (1 bank per question x ~10 questions per quiz x 20+ quizzes). They need to share these quizzes with their collogues and I have no good options for them.

If he goes through 100s of banks and shares them to the course, the banks don't copy when we import. If a bank is linked to a course it should remain linked in future copies/imports of the course. Am I missing something here?

He can share each item bank with his colleagues, but with 100s of banks, that's an incredible amount of work and ridiculously inefficient.

We can put all the quizzes into a module and share to commons. The imported questions are linked to the original item banks but the teachers that import those quizzes can't see the original item banks to review the questions. They can preview as a student but this just pulls the identified number of random questions (usually 1) from the bank.

What is the recommended course for teachers to share an entire course's worth of question banks with colleagues?

The last post here was in September, are item banks being worked on? I see nothing in the current quarter's roadmap. @MPioRoda ???
