Awareness Resources

Jump to solution

One of the things that we really try to accomplish is an awareness of the need to have accessible content within all of your courses. I work with dreesd at SCF in Florida and we run a faculty eCertification course. During week 3 we discuss Accessibility, one of the common themes from faculty that we hear is just a misunderstanding of what Accessibility and 508 compliance actually is. Just recently we found a great youtube video that we have started sharing with our faculty. Here is the video if anyone else wants to take a look and either use it, share it or create something of your own just to boost awareness. Section 508 Compliance for Digital Content - YouTube

Hey judyk@scf.edu,

Thanks for starting the conversation. This video is a great representation of what we should strive for. I've being gathering information regarding accessibility. Here are some of my links. This would be a great landing space for everyone to share their resources. Again- great video!

WebAIM- provides helpful suggestions and can certify courses

UDOIT- InstructureCon presentation

Accessibility- A list of resources

WACG- the "gold" standard for accessibility (from Aaron Cannon)

Aaron Cannon's Presentation Doc (I couldn't find the Youtube recording- if anyone finds it please post a link)

Hope this helps. I would enjoy hearing about how others are moving to be more accessible in Canvas i.e. strategic planning, etc.

I think it would really neat if we could get a thread going in the accessibility group of external resources that everyone uses to educate their faculty and staff on section 508 awareness!

stephanie.pope@csun.edu Thank you for sharing your resources as well. Right now dreesd and I are building a self-paced Canvas Accessibility course and we really want to make sure we provide our faculty with as many resources as possible. I'm excited to go through these resources that you shared to see if we can use some them. Thanks a bunch!!

Hey judyk@scf.edu,

Of course! That is a wonderful idea to create a useful tool/course for teachers.

judyk@scf.edu and dreesd

I have built a fully online, self-paced, self-directed online accessibility course for my faculty. I just uploaded in the the Canvas Commons for public consumption. Please feel free to take what you need or use the entire course.

Search under my name or the tags: Accessibility, Online Accessibility or Faculty professional Development.

I hope you and other can find this useful!

Kelley

When we talk about Accessibility, let's not forget Universal Design for Learning (UDL) which has the goal of making all courses more accessible and effective for all students.

Here are some resources:

I hope you find these useful.
