Adding assignment after mastery path has been chosen

It looks like I can add assignments to mastery paths after the class has started, but I'm having trouble getting the respective students to automatically be assigned to the new assignment.  Right now, after adding the assignment and adding it to the right mastery path, no student is assigned to it.

Is it possible to add assignments and automatically assign to students based on mastery path after the course has started and student has chosen their path ?

This seemed to work for me if I only had one assignment open based on the first assignment. But I want a homework score to open up multiple quizzes and out of 300+ students, only 2 got assigned to the quiz, when hundreds more should have gotten assigned.
