My school uses Canvas and Panopto. The latter of which allows us to record our classes. Once posted, the class video may be accessed by students who click the Panopto link. That part works fine, both on the app and on the desktop.
However, what I like to do is to embed the videos into the page corresponding with the individual class, thereby enabling a student to see all materials, including slides and the class video, on a single page. In that environment, the embedding doesn't work too well.
When I initially tried to access the videos embedded on such pages, I got a black box asking me to "Click to sign in and play video." I have attached a screenshot that I got on the desktop. For whatever reason, it seems to be working fine on the desktop, but I am still getting the same result when trying to access the video on the app. Even worse, when one clicks to sign in and play video, the app goes blank and loses functionality.
I want to correct the problem by eliminating this altogether so that my students can just play the embedded video by hitting play. Simple as that.

Hi @IrwinKramer,
That seems to be the basic behavior you can expect with the app and embedded content in most platforms at this point. We are a Kaltura (similar to Panopto) school here, and we. see the exact same behavior in most places. With the release of the discussion redesign, we find that embedded videos from discussions/announcements actually behave properly in the app for us now. I'm not sure if that's intended or not though, and I wouldn't be surprised if Instructure changes that back to the button in the future to ensure the bets compatibility among devices, browsers, and canvas/external tool domains.

Hello @IrwinKramer
What are you using to embed the videos? Does your institution have Panopto as an option in the RCE (rich content editor)? If you have this option and not using this feature I recommend that you select that option to embed. If you are using the native embed feature it may be creating problems.
Yes, I have that plugin and I have also used the embed code from Panopto. Neither of them work and both contain the problems described.
@IrwinKramer have you tried switching the share setting of the video to "Anyone with the link" if you are allowed by your institution? It sounds like issue is the login portion of the process so this should remove this aspect. I have had to do this on some videos that I know students are viewing primarily from phones (the app).
Hope this helps!
Nick
I actually have it on the most accessible setting that allows anyone in the organization to find and to view each video. Having taken the suggestion on using the the rich content editor for embedding, I now get the "Launch External Tool" link as shown in the attached screenshot. A student has to click that link to get the video, but I'd prefer if the video just displayed without that step (like it does on the desktop). Any ideas? Or, is this what I should expect?

Hi, I am a student who is running into this issue whilst trying to view my course video.
Did you have any luck fixing the issue? Is there a way to fix it on my end as a student, like a setting within my iPad/iPhone that needs changing in order to view the video?
I figured it out!
Within the actual iPad/iPhone settings for Canvas, this toggle must be switched on in order to view external videos within the app!
photo 2 is what I used to get before the toggle was on, photo 3 is what I see now after following the "Click to sign in and play video"
