Assignments accessible after available date/time?

Hi all!

So, I need to preface with saying I work in a Title 1 middle school, with great (but sneaky) kiddos. For my big unit quizzes, I use Google Forms because of their Lockdown Quiz feature that works perfectly with student Chromebooks.

On Canvas, though, I will post the link in the instructions of an Assignment so I can still upload grades to my SIS and link to Mastery Connect as normal.

With the weather being so crazy in the southeast, this entire week has been virtual and my Admin instructed me to not push back this unit quiz. So I set up the Assignment to have the "Available Until" & "Due Date" time coincide with our bell schedule.

The only thing is, a couple of my first period kiddos were able to access the Assignment and therefore the Google Form link after the "Available Until" time I set for the Assignment.

I contacted one of their mothers and she told me her student was able to access the quiz link around 9:30AM, but I had my first period times set for 8:10-9:10.

I'm just very confused as to how they can get around this. I was very meticulous when I was setting these sections and times, since I know my kids well, and if they can cheat, they will. So any guidance or answers would be very beneficial!

Hi @JayMaldonado,

I believe what you're seeing is somwhat intended behavior, although it doesn't work well for your specific setup.  The assignment details/instructions, where you're putting the Google Form link, remain visible to students even after the assignment is closed as far as I know (I just tested this to make sure my memory was correct).  After the until date, students wouldn't be able to submit an online assignment directly to Canvas, but that's not relly the scenario you have as you're just linking to a form.  If it's impreitive that the form not be accessed, I think you'd need to go back in at the appropriate time and remove the link from the details.

Hope this helps explain things, even though I know it's not ideal for you.
