Automatic Late Points by Assignment?

Does Canvas have the ability to allow instructors to apply automatic late point deductions based on grade categories rather than a universal application across the entire gradebook? I know this is NOT available now, but is there any possibility of it becoming an option?  

My district is setting different late point penalties by assignment categories. For example, daily grades would be 10 points per day up to 100 points off, quiz grades are 10 points per day up to 50 points off, and major grades are 15 points no matter the number of days. They have directly prohibited us from using the automatic late points since it seems that ONE person misapplied the points (eyeroll). This is a total headache and a waste of time, as we have to go and manually adjust every single assignment (for my summer classes, that is somewhere around 4,400 assignments). 

This is just offering a suggestion that Canvas code be altered to apply automatic late points on a per-category basis rather than across the gradebook as a whole.

I was looking for something like this yesterday! Although for my organisation's purposes, I think by category (e.g. all quizzes) wouldn't provide the granularity we need. The ability to apply late penalties by group would be great; and/or the ability to specify late penalties (or not) by individual assignment.

This is not something that Canvas can currently do and I like the idea of having it available for individual graded items but also entire categories.

While the process is currently being revised, I would recommend that you submit this as an idea in the Community.  Before doing that, I would recommend that you read Turning Your Feedback into Better Prioritization and Release Processes: Our Path Forward and then go to  Canvas Ideas - Instructure Community  and click on the "Submit an Idea" button.
