The board is set so students must post before seeing other students' posts. The student had one board with two periods (..) posted then an hour later the student posted their board with actual typed words. The student told me they tried to upload a video first and it wouldn't upload but instead posted two periods.
I've never seen a failed video upload leave two periods as an indicator it failed to upload. Is that possible? My suspicion is that the student posted the periods so they could see the other students' posts prior to making their post.
Thank you,

I think your suspicion is reasonable, @KarlaPope. What I would do is ask the student to separately send you the video they tried to upload, which might give you the opportunity to see when it was created. A student's media uploads should be in their personal files storage area, either in a folder for your course or in a folder labeled "Media Uploads."

I routinely have my students record videos for their Canvas Discussions. I just checked an example of a student who had difficulty uploading her video on the first attempt. That post was completely blank. There were no periods. She then tried again a few minutes later and was successful.
I agree that the presence of two periods is suspicious. Your student typed in the periods, probably to gain access to the thread.
