Feature or LTI for Analytics Dashboard

Hi Community!

Does anyone know if there is any sort of feature or LTI that would show me a dashboard of live data from the platform? I'm after some sort of screen showing graphics of how many active users we have on courses/course completion/assignment submission, etc.

Does anyone know of anything built-in or an LTI that does this sort of thing?

Thanks!

Hello @Fraser_UK - I have a few ideas for this.

  • The Admin Analytics feature accessible via the root account. This is something you will need to enable within the root account Feature Options ahead of running reports.  See here: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Admin-Guide/How-do-I-use-Admin-Analytics/ta-p/562116
  • The Intelligent Insights premium service. This is an add on tool that has various reporting capabilities. I am eager to try this out, especially for the ability to ask questions via natural language. We have a few other projects to attend to ahead of being able to explore this.  https://www.instructure.com/products/intelligent-insights
  • Canvas Data - while not an LTI we are able to create all sorts of reports using tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, or any SQL development tool.
  • Canvas Impact - in addition to the fantastic support elements, messaging, walkthroughs, and hint features, this tool can be used to create your own reports. For example, what are students or faculty clicking on? It is also useful to gauge LTI adoption over time.
  • And of course, 3rd party or home-grown reporting tools that use the Canvas API can also provide insight.

But if you wanted an out of the box solution then I would first look at Admin Analytics and Intelligent Insights. From Google AI:

---------

Canvas Intelligent Insights is a premium analytics tool powered by AI that provides educators and administrators with actionable insights from their Canvas data, allowing them to make data-driven decisions to improve teaching and learning effectiveness, particularly by identifying at-risk students, monitoring course readiness, and analyzing LTI usage, all through a user-friendly interface with natural language querying capabilities ("Ask Your Data") making complex data analysis accessible to a wider range of users; essentially, it helps institutions proactively address student needs and optimize their learning experience by surfacing key trends and patterns within their Canvas data. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Key Features: [1, 2, 3]
  • Ask Your Data: A conversational AI feature that lets users ask questions about their Canvas data in natural language, receiving detailed answers and visualizations without requiring technical expertise. [1, 2, 3]
  • Students in Need of Attention: Proactively identifies students exhibiting signs of potential academic struggles based on customizable indicators, allowing for early intervention and support. [2, 3, 6]
  • Course Readiness: Analyzes course structure and content to identify potential issues or areas for improvement, ensuring consistent quality across courses. [2, 3, 6]
  • LTI Usage Reporting: Provides insights into how Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) tools are being used within Canvas, helping institutions understand the effectiveness of integrated learning technologies. [2, 3, 7]
Benefits: [1, 2, 5]
  • Data-driven Decision Making: Enables educators to make informed decisions based on real-time data analysis, leading to more targeted interventions and improved student outcomes. [1, 2, 5]
  • Accessibility: The natural language interface simplifies complex data analysis, making it accessible to users with varying levels of technical proficiency. [1, 2, 3]
  • Proactive Identification of Issues: Allows institutions to identify potential problems early on, such as struggling students or poorly designed courses, enabling timely interventions. [2, 3, 5]
  • Improved Student Success: By providing insights into student engagement and potential areas of difficulty, educators can tailor their teaching approaches to better support student learning. [1, 2, 3]
Considerations: [1, 2, 4]
  • Cost: Intelligent Insights is a premium feature, so institutions need to consider the additional cost associated with accessing it. [1, 2, 4]
  • Data Interpretation: While the natural language interface simplifies analysis, users still need to understand the underlying data and interpret the results effectively. [1, 2, 3]
Overall, Canvas Intelligent Insights is a powerful tool for institutions looking to leverage their Canvas data to make informed decisions about teaching and learning practices, particularly for identifying students who may need additional support and ensuring a more consistent quality of course design across the institution. [1, 2, 3]

Generative AI is experimental.
