Grades & Gradebook visibility

Instructor question -- In navigation settings, I have the Gradebook hidden.  However, I have learned that students can still see their grades on assignments when they are viewing the "Syllabus" tab unless I have hidden each individual assignment as well.  Hiding the grade book always gave me the impression that no grades would be visible (which is how I think it should be and is maybe a change that could be made in the future).  Is there a way to prevent grades from being posted without having to set each assignment posting to "manual"?  Thanks
