Instructor can't attach files to student discussion threads

I've had a free Canvas account for over a decade. Never any issue attaching documents to discussion threads.

Suddenly I can't attach any files to student discussion thread replies. 

they can attach files no problem

I get a useless error message that gives no information whatsoever

Hello,

If you have more than 50MB of files stored in "My User Files", I don't think you can upload any more.
How about using links to files uploaded to Google Drive or OneDrive?

In case you are curious when it comes to attachments and discussions:

1. attachments added to replies for ungraded discussions impact a Canvas user account's quota
2. attachments added to replies for graded discussions do not impact a Canvas user account's quota

You can see that in the "User Quotas" section of Canvas File Quotas - Instructure Community - 387061 .
