I am an instructor in an accelerated high school. We just started using Canvas this year. I have experience with Canvas from a previous job, but I'm encountering a situation I can't seem to solve.
What we usually do at my school is this: students are allowed multiple attempts at an assignment. So long as they complete the first attempt by the due date, any subsequent attempts are not penalized for lateness. However, when my students make a second attempt on an assignment, it still assesses the late penalty.
I've attached an image as an example. The student got a 60% on his first attempt, which was before the due date. He got a 100% on his second attempt, but because it was four days after the due date, the system automatically assessed a 40% penalty, giving him the same score he had before.
Is there a way to disable the late penalty on any attempts beyond the first?

Hi @YorkistJ,
Unfortunately, this is not currently possible in Canvas. The How do I apply a Late Submission policy in the Gra... - Instructure Community - 965 guide does call out most of the caveats around late policies in the top box, this scenario included, "When taking a multiple-attempt quiz, a student who makes a new attempt after the due date has passed will receive deductions on all attempts, including attempts made before the due date."
I have said this as another to similar question recently, but I don't think this would be easy for Instructure to fix. Logically, I agree that the late policy should only apply to attempts that are late, but I think the core way grades are stored and processed in Canvas prevents this from happening. Anything is possible in the future, but I personally wouldn't expect to see this changed any time in the near future.
I know this probably is not the info you hoped to hear, but I hope having the info helps!

I would love to have a setting to handle this. I've been manually removing the late penalties, but this is time consuming, and is part of a blanket "you can take this one late with no penalty" deal. It would be much more difficulty to manage if I were just forgiving the penalty on those whose first submission was on time.
Please suggest this in the idea board!
Our institution handles penalties on the Student Information System end using the centrally stored due dates, and informed by the actual submission date, which isn;t something you'd be able to do individually.
I guess what you are really looking for is more granularity on the ability to moderate late submission policies at individual assignment level, per https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-apply-a-Late-Submission-policy-in-the-G...
