Marking Assignment Status as "Submitted" or "Extended"

I'd like to be able to mark student assignments as "Submitted" or "Extended" in some circumstances, similar to the "Missing" or "Late" tags. Is there a way to do this?

Use model:

• As a teacher, I want students to clearly see what assignments are missing. I want to mark submitted paper assignments as "Submitted" right away so they can see this. I might take several days or a week to grade certain assignments.
• As a teacher, I want to keep clear notes about which students have approved extensions to their assignments. I currently use a grade code for this and a comment. I'd rather have a flag to indicate this, perhaps even with an extension due date.  Even better would be a mechanism to link this to attendance (absent students automatically get an extra day?) or allow students to request extensions through Canvas.

Is any of this currently possible? If not, please add to requested enhancements / suggest best practices.

This is a solid idea. I'd suggest going here to submit it as a feature request. That is a separate page to submit ideas for future consideration and I do not currently see a similar idea submitted. Where you posted is a community forum to get assistance so this idea is more likely to be missed by the Instructure Product Team (they are the team that helps document and track the submitted ideas).

Hi @kmoore0,

Your school/institution Canvas admins have the ability to add up to three custom gradebook statuses to Canvas by following the How do I manage gradebook statuses in an account? - Instructure Community - 584834 guide.  I'd suggest reaching out to that team at your school/institution (usually in the eLearning / IT / Digital Education areas) to see if they'd be willing to add the wo statuses you'd like to see or not.
