Is it possible to have two different gradebooks in one Canvas course?
Hi @kmm14,
I'm not aware of any way to provide multiple gradebooks in one course. Can you describe what you're trying to do? Even with a single gradebook, it's possible to have the grade for each student composted of different assignments via the "assign to" feature of assignments. Assignment groups and weighing would apply to the entire class though.

Thank you for your response, Chris! I want to give my students a choice (out of two) of how they are assessed (one is point based, one is mastery based, so different types of assignments). I was hoping to have two different grade books each with its own group of students. Does this make sense?
I will look into what you suggest. It may be a bit tedious with 200+ students. What do you think?
Thank you!
Hi @kmm14,
Thanks for the additional details. With your response in mind, I should amend my original statement... You can have both a points-based and a mastery gradebook in the same course. With that being said, there isn't really a mechanism for students to select which of those they'd want you to use. Are you just doing different assessment options between the two gradebooks with the same assignments, or do students get different assignments based on whether they want a points gradebook or a mastery one?

Some assignments are common to both grading methods but some are different.
Hi @kmm14,
You may want to talk to your local Canvas admin team (usually in the eLearning / IT / Digital Education areas) about making course sections to differentiate the students. This may or may not be possible based on various factors, like how your Canvas permissions are granted, how users are enrolled, how grades pass back to other systems, etc). If it does end up being possible, you could have one section for point-graded students and another for mastery ones. You could then assign assignments to the appropriate sections. You could even filter gradebook views to only show one section or the other (but you'll repeatedly need to keep switching them around as you change between the gradebooks, or just leave things unfiltered and se all students in each gradebook view).
I hope this info helps a bit! Definitely let us know how everything works out for you as it could be useful to others in the future.
-Chris
