I'm confused here. One of my students can see the admin/teacher's webpage and all its features. Note that in the past, he's been an observer of another training course. How do I reset his web view as a student?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Thanks so much for the replies, @NoahBoswell @mzimmerman @paul_fynn. Unfortunately, I'm on my own. So, I'm the admin, teacher, and IT support for CANVAS since we are a small organisation. I checked the person's role and removed him from all previous training (as an observer and teacher). And it still shows no improvement. But then I check the admin webpage > settings > admins (see attachment). I removed him immediately, and it works! Well, apparently, my former colleague added him as admin a long time ago
Hi @FeliciaLasmana this is quite a serious issue as they are likely to be able to see aspects of students and class work that are reserved for the teacher, which may result in breach of provacy, confidentially, data protection and assessment integrity.
As a starting point I suggest that you check the course roster (people view) and what their enrolment status is. You may be able to update or disable this here, or you may need to contact your IT support.
It is possible that they were assigned observer status at sub-account level (or has another similar status) - you may know or may need to ask IT.
Finally you may need to check / ask IT to check, whether the permission settings are correct across the various roles.
We'd be interested to hear what you find ....
@FeliciaLasmana on top of what @paul_fynn said, something I've noticed in the past is that if someone has the Admin permission under a specific sub-account, however is a student enrolled in one of those courses, if they access it the admin way through the admin panel, they are able to access everything in teacher view. I'm not sure if it's set up the same way across all schools, however that appears to be the case with ours.
However, a student having administrative permissions is kind of unheard of, there could be a reason he was assigned those permissions. It's best to reach out to your school's IT department or known canvas administrator for more information, as Paul mentioned above. They would be able to assist you with this better than we could. Or before you do that, you could go to the 'People' tab of your course, click the breadcrumb button (as I like to call it) and click Edit Role, to change their role back to student if it isn't already. I'll attach an image below to help you out if you're stuck.
Hope this helps!
@FeliciaLasmana , as @NoahBoswell said, you'll want to double-check the person's role in the course.
However, if someone has an admin role on the server, in the sub-account where the course is, their role in the course itself is largely irrelevant. However, that it not something that you will be able to tell from the People area of the course. You'll want to have Canvas Support at your school check to see if this person has an admin role within Canvas.

I'm so glad you got it worked out, @FeliciaLasmana ! I'm also glad we were able to help a little. I didn't know you were your organization's admin, I would've provided more direct instructions to help you out if I knew you were.
It makes sense why he still had access even though you removed him from those courses.
If you ever need more help or assistance, please let us know! We're happy to help.
All the best,
Noah
