Students who have transferred class periods are showing up in both class periods on the grade book view, where next to their name it says that they are enrolled in both periods. These students do not show up in speedgrade under both periods though.
I made sure that I did not have "show inactive enrollments" checked but that did not change anything.
Solved! Go to Solution.
"Concluded" is not the same as "inactive" in Canvas. It sounds like your SIS integration (that handles the automatic enrollments from your student information system into Canvas) is now sending something different when students switch sections. You'll want to contact Canvas Support at your school to check on this...
I don't know what got updated, but now Canvas is back to only showing students in the class they are currently assigned while in the Canvas grade book. I haven't changed anything, and it still says both classes that the students has been enrolled in next to their name - but they are only showing up in one grade book. This is a good thing! But I wanted to let you know that it fixed itself or someone, somewhere fixed something.
Do you know if your courses created via SIS sync?
Are your Canvas courses year-long?
If your rosters are already generated, then they likely came from the Student Information System (whatever system you use to take attendance, find contact information, schedule, etc.), which synchronizes the rosters to Canvas. Your sections (periods) sound like they are all combined into one course (crosslisted).
We have the same issue. If a student is enrolled in multiple sections due to a mid-year schedule change, our SIS sync isn't doesn't flag when the student is inactive in one section, and active in another. It shows them as active in both, which causes them to receive notifications for both periods' due dates, and it also imposes late penalties if the non-active section has an earlier due date than the active one. I don't have a solution.
If I'm off track here, someone chime in.
Hi@jbarr -
This is exactly what is happening to us this year. Students from second semester are showing up in the first semester of a course as active. They are listed correctly in the SIS, but when Canvas pulls them over, they receive an active status. Students are receiving late and missing notifications. Did you ever find a solution during last school year?
Thank you for any help!
Under the People screen, the Canvas display has problems displaying the "Inactive" flag when the student has one active enrollment and one inactive enrollment, so both enrollments show without an indication that one enrollment is inactive. It would not surprise me if there were problems distinguishing between active and inactive enrollments in the Gradebook display when a student is in two sections, as well.
However, if I click on the student's name in the Gradebook to view the user detail pop-out, it only shows the active section enrollment.
So I checked under the individual students and both the active and inactive class is listed.
Hi @MichelleHILL3,
Do you have the "inactive enrollments" option enabled in your gradebook (see How do I view grades for inactive or concluded stu... - Instructure Community - 753 ). With that option off, you shouldn't see the behavior you're describing (as far as I know), but if it's on, it would work exactly as you're describing.

I did check that and also tried clicking it then unclicking it and restarting, but the students still showed up as enrolled in both courses. In fact, for students that were withdrawn, I see the "concluded" term by their names when I choose that, but when I choose inactive, no students are shown with the "inactive" marker.
