As an instructor, you can add a Canvas event to a course calendar. A Canvas event is a non-graded Canvas activity. Events you create on the Calendar will not appear in the Assignments page or in the Gradebook. But they will show up on the Syllabus page and student calendars. You can create events with due date times as well as all-day events.
For example, you may create a course event with a link to the readings that you want students to do in preparation for a class discussion in the Calendar. You will not grade students on whether or not they have done the reading, but you are providing the readings on a specific day to help them organize their time more efficiently.
You can also create a recurring event.
Note:
- Events that include a conferencing link in the description or location field display a Join button on students' List View Dashboard.
- Both instructors and students can add personal events to their own calendars.

When creating a new event, if you want to create the same event multiple times for yourself or for a group, you can create a recurring (or repeating) event. Repeating events creates multiple copies of the event every day, week, or month. For example, you may create a recurring group event for a weekly study group. This may help keep you organized and prepared for your course.
If you are an instructor, you can also create duplicate calendar events for course sections.
Tips for recurring events:
- Weekly events are repeated on the day of the week of the first event. For example, if an event is created on a Monday and repeats weekly, the next instance of the event will appear on the following Monday, regardless of the actual date.
- Monthly events are repeated on the day of the month of the first event. For example, if an event is created on July 6 and repeats monthly, the next instance of the event will appear on August 6.
Note: Events that include a conferencing link in the description or location field display a Join button on each student's List View Dashboard.

Notes:
- Events that include a conferencing link in the description or location field display a Join button on students' List View Dashboard.
- You cannot edit the Location field when editing separate events. The Location field can only be edited by editing the main calendar event.
When creating a calendar event as an instructor, if you want to create the same event multiple times for a course, you can create a duplicate event. Duplicating events creates multiple copies of the event every day, week, or month. For example, you may create a duplicate course event for student study groups every week. You will not grade students on whether or not they have participated in the study group, but you are providing a resource activity on a specific day to help them organize their time and prepare for your course more efficiently.
Once created in a course calendar, duplicate events are not linked together and are independent events. Therefore, if users need to modify an event, each event has to be modified individually. Additionally, duplicate events can only be created when creating a new event; editing an existing event does not display the duplicate option.
You can also create recurring calendar events.
Tips for duplicate events:
- Weekly events are duplicated on the day of the week of the first event. For instance, if an event is created on a Monday and repeats weekly, the next instance of the event will appear on the following Monday, regardless of the actual date.
- Monthly events are duplicated on the day of the month of the first event. For instance, if an event is created on July 6 and repeats monthly, the next instance of the event will appear on August 6.
Note: Events that include a conferencing link in the description or location field display a Join button on students' List View Dashboard.

Open Calendar

In Global Navigation, click the Calendar link.
Add Event
Make sure the checkbox of the course in which you're making an event is selected [1].
Click any date on the calendar to add an event [2]. Or, click the arrows next to the month name to navigate to a different month [3] and select a date.
If you don't want to manually locate the date, you can click the Add icon [4].
View More Options

Add a title [1] and location for the event [2]. The date and time fields are automatically populated based on the current date but do not need to be removed.
In the Calendar drop-down menu [3], select the course calendar for the event.
To add different dates for each section, click the More Options button [4].
Use a Different Date

Click the Use a different date for each section checkbox.
Set Section Dates

The default date is removed and replaced with all the sections in your course.
For each section, type in a date, or select a date by clicking the Calendar icon [1], and specify the start and end time [2]. If you don't want one section to see the event, leave the date and time fields blank.
Note: When the Use a different date for each section checkbox is selected, the Frequency drop-down menu is removed.
Duplicate Event

Click the Duplicate checkbox.
Note: If you cannot see the checkbox, you selected the wrong course calendar when creating the new event.
Add Duplicate Details

By default, events are set to repeat every week [1].
If you want to change the repeating event to daily or monthly, click the Week(s) drop-down menu and select your preferred time range. You may also have to change the number that precedes the time period.
By default, events are set to create one occurrence [2], meaning it will create the initial event plus one additional (two total events). If you want to change the number of additional occurrences, enter the number in the text field. The calendar event supports up to 200 additional occurrences.
If you want to automatically add a number to the end of each event title (such as Event 1, Event 2, etc.), click the Count checkbox [3].
Create Event

Click the Create Event button.
View Events
View the events in your course calendar.
Remember, once created, duplicate events are not linked together and are independent events. Therefore, if you need to modify an event, each event has to be edited individually.

This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 7/03/24.
Description
When clicking on undated events within your calendar, selecting the option to edit that assignment/discussion/etc from the pop up will just close the window. It does not allow you to edit undated events within the Calendar.
Expected Behavior
Selecting to edit an undated event should bring up a menu with the assignment name and date that are editable, as it does for already dated events/assignments
Workaround
No workaround exists at this time.
Steps to Reproduce
Prerequisites: Have an instructor enrolled into a course with multiple assignments without due dates
-
Act as an instructor
-
Access the calendar
-
Make sure the course calendar is toggled, and click on “undated” in the bottom right to show all undated course items.
-
Click on one of the assignments, notice the pop up menu which has the option to edit
-
Select to edit, notice the window closes with no error or additional pop ups.

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone might have encountered this issue and can shed some light on it.
We’ve had a strange issue with a series of calendar events in Canvas for one of our modules. The series of events has been working fine, but today’s specific event has mysteriously disappeared from the calendar. The series continues as expected after today’s date, and all the other content (assignments, tasks, etc.) seems unaffected.
Here’s a summary of the situation:
- The event for today was definitely there this morning because it was displayed on a classroom screen for students to use during scheduling.
- Around midday, it vanished from the calendar without any apparent reason.
- No notifications of the event being deleted were received (we usually get these if something is removed).
- There are no conflicting events, deadlines, or quiz submissions that overlap with the missing calendar entry.
- None of the lecturers or admins made changes to the content or the calendar.
I’ve checked our Canvas settings and the event log, but I can’t find any explanation for why this might have happened.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues with calendar events disappearing? If so, do you know what might cause this or how to prevent it in the future?
Thanks in advance for any insights you can share!
