Once you delete a course, the course will be completely removed from your institution's account and will not be viewable by you, prior students, or the account administrator. We do not recommend deleting courses, especially if the course contains content and student data because you may need to access that information a later date.
If you only want to remove the course from Courses & Groups in the Global Navigation, you can change the course end date, or if you have permission, conclude your course instead.
Notes:
- Before you delete your course, make sure you have a record of your Course ID number. Administrators can restore deleted courses if they know the Course ID number. You can locate your Course ID number at the end of your course URL (i.e. canvas.instructure.com/courses/XXXXXX).
- Deleting a course is a course permission for manually created courses only. If the Permanently Delete this Course button does not appear in Course Settings and your course was not generated through a student information system (SIS), this setting has been restricted for your course. If you are an instructor, contact your admin for assistance.
- Courses are not deleted from an account unless done so by you or another user at your institution.

I am an instructor, and a canvas course that I created with my supervisor was deleted. Can any troubleshooting help be done to recover the lost course?
You can delete a section by editing your course Settings in Canvas. You cannot delete a section with users enrolled.
Note: Sections may be added by your institution's student information system (SIS). If a section in your course includes an SIS ID, you may not have permission to delete sections.

An admin can restore courses that have been reset or deleted. You must know the Course ID number to restore the course. If your instructor cannot locate the Course ID number, you can access the instructor’s user details and look for the Course ID under Page Views. The Course ID can be found by viewing the number at the end of the browser URL of a page view in the deleted course (e.g. account.instructure.com/courses/XXXXXX).
Restoring a course restores the previous course URL and all content. However, enrollments cannot be restored.
Note: Using an SIS ID will not restore a course unless the course was deleted via SIS.

Engineers are currently investigating the issue.
Description
When an image is added to a New Quiz question in an item bank and that item bank is shared to the institution and used in a different course the image is hard linked to the file in the original course it was uploaded from. If that course or file in the original course is deleted it will break all references to it in new quiz questions.
Expected Behavior
Images in item banks shared at an institution level should be able to be used in different courses without relying on the original course content
Workaround
No workaround exists at this time.
Steps to Reproduce
-
Create an item bank in a course
-
Upload a course image to a question in the item bank
-
Notice you are presented with a warning that the link may not work in other courses
-
-
Share the item bank to the institution
-
Use the question from the bank in another course
-
Delete the file in the original course
-
Notice the image is now broken in the other course

You can delete a group set from your course if necessary. Deleting a group set also deletes all groups within that set.
Notes:
- If you delete a group set that has been used for a graded group assignment, student names rather than group names, will display in SpeedGrader. However, students that were assigned grades prior to deleting the group set will still display the same submission, grade, and assignment comments.
- If the deleted group set was assigned for a future group assignment and is not replaced with another group set, students may see a warning that their submission is being used for a group. However, their submission, grade, and assignment comments will only display for them.
