Hi folks, it looks like Scott the Magnificent has already created us a CanvasHacks public classroom to play in, and enrolled us as teachers.

Any thoughts on structure? I have a similar course that is mostly complete that I am preparing for my faculty that I could upload to provide a bit of structure. It is intended for non-coders, and has the following module structure:

• About HTML and the HTML Editor - DO NOT FEAR THE CODE!
• Beginning Users
• Intermediate users
• Advanced users
• Sharing (sharing has a discussion and links to external resoursces

However, I am not a pushy sort, so whatever anybody else wants, I am more than happy to go along with. I can always upload stuff a piece at a time and fit it where I can.

My "lessons" are all one page, and include:

• A brief description
• The code snippet
• Anatomy of the code snippet where I identify those components that are easy to modify by novices like myself
• Instructions for use
• Troubleshooting, and
• Sometimes some obvious variations based on changes to parts of the code (colors, sizes, positions etc. - the minor stuff)

Let me know what your think!

Oh yah, and I also have a hokey Home page, because that's just the kind of guy I am:)

Great idea, Kelley.

I created a course shell in resources.instructure.com.  It looks like well over 60 people have already requested either student or teacher level access.  Those of you with teacher level access, feel free to invite your friends.  Anyone else interested, please comment to that effect.   @kmeeusen ​ and the super helpful  @Ron_Bowman ​ have been great about going in and inviting folks.

What has been done?

How can I get to the course?   I'm not able to log in as a student; not sure why.   I tried to set up a new account and ... I need some kind of log in that I don't have.

Thanks for trying!   Hoping there will come a day when Canvas is really a thing I can do!

... okay, noting I'm in as a 'teacher' so I'll try that angle...nope. 

I'm logged in already and I just tried to change my password and it didn't tell me anything went wrong.

Does that mean that I changed my password? 

Or, if I didn't get teh "old one" right, does it just ignore what I do?

Neither of those passwords worked when I tried to log in "cold" (not through the 'saved password' option through the page I got to when I clicked my invite to "get started." 

Could it be because I was logged in from another window?

It would seem that if I were logged in, I shouldn't be taken to the door and then denied access.

I'll try logging out and getting in that way. 

Technology is great when it works!

My login just won't work for "resources" -- do I need to set up a separate account for that, the way there are separate accounts for community and learn.canvas.net and canvas.instructure.com?

If so, I would rather strongly suggest that instead of blithely saying "you need a Canvas account," which implies that a Canvas account is what you need, that someone change that language.

Is my frustration showing?  

Yes, now that I have created a new account I have access to it.

I'm hoping that if there are any other Things Canvas Does That YOu Have To Register Separately For (but all called "Canvas accounts") that I'll finally remember this.   Everybody else obviously does.

Hi Susan:

CanvasHacks is on a Resources.Instructure account - all Canvas instances are their own account, so if you were trying to use your log-in credentials for your own school, that won't work.

You may be asked to create an account, if so then so do. Use your email as your user name.

For the record, you are very far from being the only person this has happened to, so don't feel bad.

Here's the real issue:   I am asked whether I have a Canvas Account.

... wait for it ... I do.

How peculiar of me to expect, then, to be able to log in with it -- especially with an identical looking login page! 

When y'all are wondering why people "fear the code," welp, it has a lot to do with issues like that.   I"m supposed to figure out somehow that "all Canvas instances are their own account."   Hey, I've had enough coding courses to know what that means -- but I also expect the words "Canvas account" to mean "Canvas account, " not "account for this, individual instance of Canvas, each of which has its own account." 

(I'm in with a Free for Teachers account, so I don't have a school person who'd know from instances to warn me about that.)  

Thanks for the explain ... I've gotten accustomed to "hit a dead end, beat on it for a while, figure out the workaround, and then have somebody explain it to me" timing   A busier day and this would have happened first so I do appreciate!

Yes -- but I shouldn't have spent half an hour on what should have been 4 minutes to make an account, in my humble opinion.

It makes me decide not to try many things -- I wouldn't have tried this except I got a deadline extended, because I've learned again and again that anything in Canvas will probably have at least half an hour and maybe more figuring out something that's been left out of basic directions.

I am just glad you made it in!

I understand you use an FFT Canvas account, and this does not come with training, and all your posts lately clearly indicate that training is needed. At my school, we do not let faculty teach using Canvas without training. Canvas is actually a very good LMS, and by far the best of the four that I have used in my career. However, this Community is here to help you, if you are willing to give them a chance to do so.

So some helpful resources I am offering:

• The Community Answers section is awesome! You can find the Guides, Ask questions and review answers to questions similar to yours, and find links to some great Canvas Resources:  Find Answers
• The Getting Started Guide for Instructors is very handy: Getting Started with Canvas as an Instructor

In my humble (and I mean that) opinion, many of the reasons I "need training" are because of poor design and glitches, and I'm willing to bet a few snacks that the glitches aren't included in the training.    Your lauded resources -- well, they're great and awesome and handy, I suppose, but I've struggled with them because of the design. 

For instance, it's very hard to figure out where to start.   The "video guide" *looks*  as if it's got a good outline.   It starts out with an introduction.  Then, a few videos in--- it shifts! it changes!   And now all the videos are sorted alphabetically.

Why not sort them *all* alphabetically, or at least separate the "introduction" from the "alphabetical' ones?  

The "separate login for separate communities" with completely misleading questions... that's a design flaw.   The purpose of training shouldn't be to save the hassles of getting around poor design.   Maybe I'm wrong (seriously), but I think good design should bump up a little on the priority list.

Still, if "the culture" means spending hours mucking about  is necessary, so be it -- though I do intend to do some mucking about with D2L over the break to see if it might be a better fit.
