Resubmission Button Text

Hi all

For the Assignment Enhacement feature, the language used for the button for a student to resubmit to an assignment has been updated. I've attached an image below, showing the text as it now reads, "Try Again".

Is there any scope to change this text, either institutionally or to rename it back to the previous text, "New Attempt"?

Within our Higher Education institution, our technical user group feels this may be somewhat inappropriate language for our students when they come to submit often weighted essays and are to undertake online examinations, and there may potentially some be some user confusion as to if their submission has gone through or not, with 'try again' being the anxiety-inducing type of phrase you may expect to see with any kind of internet or connectivity issue preventing a student from recording a submission to their assignment.

We would be interested in views upon this terminology from this group.

I also agree with this, it might be confusing to students in terms of where they are in the submission process. Is this button only available if they've failed the assignment or is it always there once the student has submitted?

Hi @b_w_reid 

This is currently the text on the button just for them to submit another attempt - regardless of what they may later be marked as, in my testing of this feature.

We haven't turned on assignment enhancements yet, and are deciding if we will do so for fall. I was testing yesterday when I noticed the language of the button for a file upload assignment. I found it confusing to interpret...my file took a moment to load in the preview, so my initial interpretation of "try again" meant I needed to reattach my file because it's not linked correctly to my assignment. If a student makes this interpretation and reattaches the same file, they may use up one of their assignment attempts and run out of attempts if their teacher has set a limit. It may also be confusing for the teacher if they find multiple submissions for students in speedgrader.

@audra_agnelly  - to provide a little reassurance, after I tested Assignment Enhancements for two terms in courses I taught, my advice to our institution was to enable it. And so it has been live now for a month with several thousand students using it. Our support team lead just told me they receive a whopping total of two help requests.  The issues:

1) one student could not find the button to submit.  They were guided to scroll down the page.

2) one student uploaded a file but did not press submit.  They were guided to check off the Turntin agreement and to press the submit button.

Having written this, has anyone offered alternative text to the existing 'try again'? How about: Resubmit?

I think that 'Resubmit' would be a much better replacement for 'Try Again', personally.

"Resubmit" implies the new submission replaces the previous one, which I do not think it true. For some assignments where a draft and final are being submitted they are distinct. would "Submit Again" be more clear and cover more use cases and not sound as much like the previous submission failed (Try Again)?

I agree that 'New Attempt' would be preferrable and less confusing.

We just turned this feature back on to review again and we absolutely dislike Try Again. It really sends a message that something was wrong with the assignment submission. 
Please change this to New Attempt or Re-Submit Assignment. Something else.

I can see how "Try Again" is good language for K-6 users.  Maybe it can be wrapped into the "Canvas Elementary Theming" option, and something like "New Attempt" be used for the standard theming?  (though this might necessitate a separate set of screen shots for the student "how-to" guides)
