I am trying to add my rubric to an assignment and then use it in Speedgrader. I do not see the box to check to "use this rubric for assignment grading" as an option. It's not a huge deal, but then when I am grading in Speedgrader I need to reenter the scores from the rubric into the individual questions in Speedgrader.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Are you looking for the checkbox within SpeedGrader or on the assignment itself? Where it should be is at the bottom of the assignment where you click +Rubric to add one. If you see the rubric at the bottom of the assignment page, click on the pencil icon at the top right of the rubric to edit it, then scroll to the checkboxes underneath the rubric. That is where the option is supposed to be. It should show up in the same spot when first adding the rubric. It only shows up when editing a rubric after clicking to add one.

Hi there, @MatthewHammers ...
The response you got from @JeffCampbell is spot-on. In addition, I wanted to share this Guide with you...as it has some illustrations showing exactly where you should be seeing the checkbox for "Use this rubric for assignment grading".
How do I add a rubric to an assignment?
Hope this extra bit of information will be of help to you!
Thank you for the replies. I actually also didn't see the +Rubric button at the bottom described in How do I add a rubric to an assignment? As a workaround, I was able to add the rubric from the three dot button at the top right. It is there that the "use this rubric for assignment grading" checkbox was missing. I've attached three screenshots to help illustrate what I'm seeing.
@MatthewHammers ...
You have correctly identified the differences between adding a rubric to a graded assignment vs. adding a rubric to a graded quiz.
As you can see from both of these Guides, the process and location of where adding a rubric is different. And, as you've seen, the option to "Use this rubric for assignment grading" is not available for quizzes. The reason, I believe, for this is because quizzes typically use the points from the quiz questions rather than the points from the rubrics. In fact, there is no connection that I've seen between points on a quiz and points on a rubric. For example, if a student answers 8 questions correctly on a 10-question quiz, the attached rubric does not pick up on that score.
As maybe an extreme example, in my former role as a Canvas administrator in higher education, I had worked with a couple instructors over the years at the school where they had quizzes (let's say the questions totaled 50 points), but the rubrics they had wanted to include with the quiz had a different grand total (such as 40 points). So, you can see how this might be confusing to students thinking that they are answering a 50-point quiz, but then the rubric is only worth 40 points. So, what is the quiz actually worth? While I didn't always understand why some instructors wanted to attach a rubric to a quiz, I'm sure there were very valid reasons for the need to do so.
I hope this explains how things work with Classic Quizzes vs. Assignments in Canvas. Sing out if you have any other questions about this...thanks!
I had this problem intermittantly. I realized that I was adding the rubric at different steps in the process. Here's the deal. I was able to add a rubric when it was the FIRST STEP. Once I populated the discussion with instructions or photos/videos, I would get an "add rubric" button that did not fetch rubrics or let me create them. SOLUTION. Empty the description area of the discussion. I did a cut, then added the rubric, and pasted my prior work. This worked for me. I think it's a bug that should be reported, but not sure how to do that. 🙂
