Photo competition graded by students

Dear colleauges,

In Canvas, I would like students to create a photo competition, which the students will grade themselves by voting for photos that other students upload. The most simple idea is that each student can vote for their favourite photo that was uploaded by others, only one vote per student and the photo with the highest number of vote wins.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how this might be implemented in Canvas?

The simplest way I can think of to do this would be using Discussions.  You can create a discussion and enable liking so studends could vote.  Students can attach or embed their image in a discussion post they create.  There are a couple things that may not work exactly how your original vision was though...  First, you mentioned grading (I'm not sure if you meant the context of giving points in the gradebook or not), and while you could make the discussion graded and assign points, discussions wouldn't auto-grade based on anything.  Second, there wouldn't be a way to limit students to a single like/vote, so they could in theory like every single image, but as a practical matter I don't think many would do that and there'd still likely be a pretty clear winner with more likes than the others.

Perhaps others will have some additional suggestions for you too!

Thanks for the ideas Chris, I will test them in a sandpit course I have. It would be nice if people had ideas how to post the photos and to have an automatic tally of one vote per student and be able to rank the photos.

Can anyone can think of a way to set that up in the assignment module?

I ran a similar photo project and used peer reviews with anonymous settings turned on to avoid bias. Worked pretty smoothly. If you're planning to show off the final images somewhere, www.nixplay.com is handy for creating digital slideshows that are easy to share or display on screens in common areas. Keeps things fun and visible beyond the grading.
