Today, an instructor is grading his assignment submissions in Speedgrader. When he submits a comment this error occurs: "An error occurred updating this assignment"
So, you'll notice that you cannot see the comment anymore. In order for the instructor to see the comment he has to Download Submission Comments or see the gradebook. It looks fine from the student view....
Is this a part of the new release?
Thanks for your help!
While it's not an answer for your question, if it makes you feel any better, I just had an instructor call me with this exact problem not 15 minutes ago, disappearing comments and all. We found when we checked student view that, sure enough, students have all of the comments she tried to add. I'm thinking it might be time to submit a Canvas ticket...
It was fine earlier in the morning and then later in the early afternoon it started happening. I found if I refreshed Speedgrader the comments would show up in teacher view. Definitely time to put in a ticket.
IT IS FIXED TODAY! Thanks!
No, it's not, i've had this problem since you reported, and it's still a pain to write and read comments ¿how can I put a ticket?
It is not fixed. I have had this issue for a few weeks. I think when the comment fails to load and the instructor resubmits the comment, it won't show later. That's just my observation, though.
I had this issue. I discovered that I had a student linked in the group that had dropped the class. Once I removed to inactive student, it worked.
We've had a similar issue. In our case the teacher created a Groupset without any groups, then assigned the Groupset to an assignment and available to all. When the teacher made the comment it disappeared. However, when downloading the assignment comments the comment was visible in the PDF. Even adding the student to a group the comment was still not visible. We've been able to replicate the problem. No solution to this.
Having the same problem; it's been working fine up until now. I guess this bug has been a thing for 5 years now?
I can confirm that this is still occurring and needs to be addressed and investigated further.
This is STILL happening today, February 13, 2024.
I am also having the same issue. For me, it started this week. I re-entered the same comment a few times for students thinking it just didn't save, but each time I returned to the assignment submission in SpeedGrader the comments were not there. However, like everyone else, when I click "download submission comments" the comments (and repeated ones) are there. There is no way for me to go back and edit these due to this issue. Hopefully, we'll get some insight from Canvas soon.
It happened to me too. June 2024. Still waiting for the solution from Canvas support team.
Same issue here too, October 2024.
I had this error when I was using the API to upload comments. I was not posting comments to the correct attempt at the submission. Check your comment is on the last student attempt - or that you are looking at the correct attempt.
LMS Admin here, we had the same issue and found a solution.
TLDR:
The assignments were set-up as Group Assignments and tied to a Group Set. However the Group Set was not fully set-up, there were no groups in the set and no students in groups. Enabling the "Assign Grades to Each Student Individually" setting in the Assignment settings made the comments appear in SpeedGrader.
Longer Story:
An instructor reported "my student comments or comments that I make on an assignment do not appear when I am using speed grader...I have to know a comment is there and hit download comments to see it." We found that this was only happening to Group Assignments where 1) all students would be given the same grade and 2) tied to a single Group Set that had no groups in the set and no students in groups.
When students are not being graded individually in a Group Assignment, SpeedGrader will only show comments that were sent to the entire group. If a Group Set is not fully set-up (has Groups within the Group Set and students assigned to those groups) Canvas cannot identify any student as being part of any group. If a student isn't part of a group they can't send a Submission Comment to a group and SpeedGrader can't show the Submission Comment because the Submission Comment wasn't sent to the group.
The solution for current courses that already have student submissions iss to enable the "Assign Grades to Each Student Individually" setting in the Assignment settings. Once each student is being graded individually, SpeedGrader can display the Submission Comments that weren't sent to a group.
Seeing this issue with group assignments, however the instructor has done everything correctly: students are populated in the groups; she's not trying anything fancy like assigning grades to each student individually; groups were made before creating the assignment; cleared browser cache numerous times since she kept seeing the error; using most updated version of Chrome.
