Hi I would like to ask how you guys ensure that all learning material on Canvas including pdfs, presentation slides and tutorials are WCAG compliant, is there anyway Canvas can flag if any learning resource on canvas is created but is not WCAG compliant?

We have an institutional installation of Ally (formerly Blackboard Ally) on Canvas, and it does a fairly good job, although there are one or two issues which relate either to one or both of the Canvas / Ally architecture

examples

- copy a Canvas course from 2022 to 2023, use Ally to 'fix' the issues in the 2023 version, copy to 2024 - you are back to the 2022 version

- admins can download a detailed file by file accessibility report from the sub-account level, this doesn't seem to be available to instructors at course level

- fixes to RCE content show immediately in the Canvas accessibility view, fixes to files won't refresh until one new file is uploaded

Generally we are pretty happy with it, as it does the following

  • immediate instructor feedback within the content as to accessibility level
  • dashboard feedback for individual courses
  • dashboard and report feedback at account level
  • range of account level views
  • students can choose from 14 different acccessible formats including screen reader and Braille

My District used to use Ally, but we switched to Pope Tech a couple of years ago. Overall, Pope Tech seems to catch most accessibility errors with Canvas.
