Workaround for separating students who can view certain modules & assignments - mastery paths not working.

I teach health and I need for the Sex Education Curriculum to only be visible to students who have permission to participate in Sex Ed. I have tried using Mastery Paths for the two separate groups, but it doesn't work. 

Using master paths, right now, both groups can see the lessons, even though I separated the lessons to go with their mastery path AND the students can't see any of the assignments posted.

How can I separate the material for Sex Education students versus Non Sex Education students, so they don't see each others modules and assignments?

It's not perfect, but you may consider creating sections in the course and assigning students to the needed section. With sections, you can choose to create announcements, discussions, and assignments that are only given to a specific section. Unfortunately, modules/pages cannot be limited to only certain sections. You could potentially get around this by having requirements for different modules, such as the student cannot access the first sex ed module until they have submitted an assignment that is only available to students in the sex ed section.

@JessicaDeanSVC  That's an interesting workaround. I think, though, that the students in the "Non Sex Education" section would still see the module and the items in it. While they wouldn't be able to access the module, they would still see the grayed out titles of its contents. I think that could still be problematic.

Not being able to designate who can access Pages and Modules has been an ongoing issue for Canvas. There are many reasons why an instructor might want to create a Page or a Module that is only viewable by some, and not all, of the class. 

My hope is that the Canvas developers give us more flexibility.

I'm really curious as to why Mastery Paths aren't working. But with that issue, I would maybe ditch the Modules for this unit and use Assignments for all content (no Pages). Just put the lesson content into the RCE of the Assignment, and then select the recipients of that Assignment (either by Section as suggested by @JessicaDeanSVC or by typing names into the Assign To box). You will need to tell the students to access their assignments from their To Do list or from their Calendar for this unit.

Another option is just to make generically named groups and create a Module for each, with Assignments created as above in each Module. Give the assignments very generic names (or just numbers) so that students won't see any words they don't have permission to see. Even though students will see the "other" Module, they won't be able to access it. Just avoid Pages since those can't be targeted by recipient.

I think we're heading to a feasible "work around."

For the students in the Sex Education "section," create a Module. The only contents in that module should be Assignments and Quizzes. Make sure that you only assign them to the Sex Education "section." If you have content that ordinarily would be in a Page, make a non-graded, no submission Assignment.

When you limit Assignments and Quizzes to just one section of your course, your other students won't even see the titles. All they will see is the name of your Module. That's it.

Make sure that you are creating a "section" for those students, not a Canvas "group." Remember that "sections" are used to differentiate students in your course. "Groups" are for collaborative work.

I am not sure why they weren't working, if it was because some of the students who were given the points couldn't upload their permission slip or because I had the trigger item built before some parts of the conditional items.

I rebuilt the trigger item and made it so the permission slips didn't have to be uploaded so it was just conditional on the grade I put in. (I decided to try this before I changed all the pages to assignments).  It worked.
