When you’re knee-deep in data about your online courses, how do you find meaningful information that leads to action? This session will provide an overview of a current project seeking to use Page View data to identify behavior patterns and evidence of social, cognitive, and teaching presence.

 @abbittjt ,

Your research and analysis was very thorough in your presentation. I enjoyed hearing your application of the community of inquiry model.

Darrel, I wanted to comment specifically on your part of the presentation regarding student participation. You mentioned several times wanting to find an "easy button" or a simple color-coded interface that would identify which students were struggling within your class. Our institution has partnered with Alliance Partner - AspirEDU to access their LTI Dropout Detective and well, it actually provides the data for struggling students in the exact form you mentioned; a stoplight themed risk factor involving red, yellow and green colors. We have really benefited from this program for retention and while it does not get as deep regarding individual page views and time spent on each page as you shared in your presentation, it might be something that you or your institution could benefit from implementing. I am copying in a quick pic of the DD student dashboard.

I have to agree that Dropout Detective came to mind as well when I was reading some of the tweets from this session. I think the page view logs have some interesting and sometimes useful information, but when we analyzed them last summer we found that they didn't directly play a role in student success. Yet, Dropout Detective is definitely on to something in terms of which students they flag as being at risk and especially most at risk.

I, too, have to agree with the comments made about Dropout Detective.  We have been using it for 18 months and our retention rates have gradually increased over these 18 months.  Dropout Detective allows our student support team to detect, early in the process, when a student begins to struggle in their classrooms. We are then able to reach out to these students directly to have conversations and develop a support plan on how to best assist them.

Hi,  @abbittjt  !  You saw some comments above from some of our clients.  We've invested a lot in our student retention analytics (Dropout Detective) and our instructor analytics (Instructor Insight).  I hope you'll take a look at what we have.  You can reach me through our Partner page - Alliance Partner - AspirEDU or through the community.  We're based in Tampa, so we're fellow Sunshine Staters.
