Currently, Instructure has five different apps, but when evaluating the core app (Canvas Mobile), the team asked "how do we make mobile apps tha tare more helpful to more people?" That's a huge question since the answer is complicated. As @peytoncraighill explained the reality is: "Canvas is big; screens are small; people are different." Because of this, the current, beloved Canvas app will be divided into three apps to accommodate three very different role-centric experiences.
Canvas Parent (blue)
Canvas Teacher (yellow)
Canvas Student (red)
Role based apps will soon come to the app store. These variations will allow users to match an app with their needs in order to create an optimal Canvas Mobile experience.
Awesome session re-cap, @KristinL ! Chalk-full of bullet points, you've captured the highlights perfectly! ![]()
Hi Kristin,
Kudos for posting a very useful summary -- thank you!
Was there any discussion about when the role based apps would become available?
It sounds like they probably aren't going to arrive in time for the start of Fall but wanted to confirm that, if possible.
Thank you again!

Hi Jay - I believe that Canvas Parent beta will be ready this fall. Canvas Teacher will likely be 2017.
As a 1-1 iPad school (one of those mentioned in the presentation) I have gone through the presentation a couple of times and not heard anything about trying to improve the presentation of pages in mobile devices. This is causing us a huge headache particularly staff designing pages on Canvas on the web leading to some awful views on the mobile eg tables, buttons etc.
Perhaps there could have been something here for us to take away (when compared with all the goodies for those using the Web) or maybe I missed something and someone could point me in the right direction?
With 6million downloads I would think you could have a bit more clout?
