[Assignments] Assign to by Group for Individual Assignment

This idea was submitted previously and archived (see below). I would also request the same thing. For individual assignments, I would like to be able to "Assign to" by Group. I often divide the class into groups with varying discussion assignments or assignment due dates, yet these are individual assignments. I teach large classes, so it is too much work to type in individual names repeatedly.

Assign to" Student Groups for Individual Assessment

I want to be able to create Groups based on their modification or need and assign it to that group.Currently we have teachers who have to type in a LOT of student names when it's a modified assignment. Being able to pre-create groups with those students in them and assign or exclude that group would save a lot of time.

Much of what I do revolves around getting students into clinicals with hospitals and clinics. Every clinical site has different requirements, so I have modules assigned to a Section specific to that clinical site. By doing Groups, I have been able to separate students into their individual program of study, which is helpful. However, each of our programs have different rotation dates, making it difficult to track when each Section and Group needs to submit their documentation. Having the Group Set is helpful, as I can give due dates, but it would be even more helpful if I could assign multiple Group Sets in an assignment, so I can track the several cohorts we have.

For example, our Associate students start clinicals in August, but our Bachelor Sonography students don't start until March. If they are at the same clinical site, having multiple Group Sets would allow me to set individual due dates; one for the Associate Students and another for Sonography, without having multiple assignments running around.

How hard would this be to add?

Problem statement:

Teachers/instructors can create Groups/Group Sets, but those sets cannot be selected in the Assign to... section unless the Group Assignment box is checked. Teachers need to be able to create various groups of students and assign differentiated work to those groups without students seeing each others' work. For example, students with a particular IEP accommodation may need a modified assignment. Having to type each name is cumbersome and inefficient when the Groups feature is already available. Creating Sections within the course is neither ideal nor allowed by some institutions. Groups may change frequently throughout the term, and allowing teachers to Assign to... a Group even for individual assignments is a reasonable solution.

Proposed solution:

Instructor-created Groups should always show up in the Assign to... box, even for individual assignments and not just for Group Assignments. Instructors should be able to select a group of students without having to type names each and every time.

Problem statement:

Currently in groups, a teacher/designer cannot add a unique quiz or assignment to a specific group. In addition, it is not possible to create modules in groups. We have a non-academic course focusing on student academic success that includes literally every student on campus. They are divided by sections and groups based on program and graduating year. The assignments/quizzes would be used as tools for tutoring within groups.

Proposed solution:

The proposed solution is easy simply add Modules, Quizzes, and Assignments as options in Groups. Not having this option greatly limits the options or requires us to create individual courses for all these students. Thank you for considering this option.

Problem statement:

Instructors can differentiate assignment due dates for individual students or course sections, but not instructor-created student groups. Many instructors need to differentiate assignments for several students who need extended due dates, as an example. In order to do this, they need to select each student individually for each assignment. This is time-consuming and cumbersome at best, and opens instructors up to making mistakes that could violate a student's IEP, at worst.

Proposed solution:

I propose an option in the "assign to" section of assignments, modules, and pages where an instructor can assign a due date for individual (non-group) assignments to student groups. This would function very similarly to how it currently works for assigning to different sections or individual students. Instructors need to be able to quickly, easily, and accurately differentiate assignments and assignment due dates by individual students, course sections, or by manually created groups of students. This last option is what is needed. This Q&A forum (https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Releases-Q-A/Features-Q-amp-A-Canvas-Release-Notes-2024-07...) and this archived feature idea (https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Ideas/Assignments-Assign-to-by-Group-for-Individual-Assign...) both include lengthy discussions about this proposal, dating back to 2016. Some workarounds proposed have been to either create a group assignment (which is not what is intended) or to create course sections (which many instructors can not do). This idea is for instructors who wish to assign an individual assignment (not a group assignment) and select student groups for differentiated due dates. Many institutions do not allow instructors to create their own sections, so offering a workaround to be able to truly differentiate assignments is crucial.

Problem statement:

Scenario: I have a group of students who are on different levels within the same class. I am giving one group of students specific assignments in a module and the other group another set of assignments in another Module. The current group setting allows you to create groups for the students and grade them individually, but the students can see other student submissions.

Proposed solution:

Teachers should have the ability to separate their classes into groups. Along with that separation, the ability to grade the students individually with an individual student submission versus the current way, which allows students to see other student submissions.
