Arabic page title issue

Hi everyone,

I work for a school that teaches several languages, including some that do not use the Latin alphabet, like Chinese, Arabic, Greek and Russian. I've just received a mail from a colleague that his class diary is not accessible to students, even though all settings (published, visibility, and so on) are as they should be.

We've been looking into the matter, and it seems the problem is the title of the page: all pages in his course are visible to students (e.g. Homepage, Contact, FAQ...), except for the ones that have an Arabic title (so far only the diary).

I've tried adding pages to modules, creating other pages with Arabic titles, etc, and the result remains the same: although the pages are visible to the teacher, they disappear as soon as we move to student view. Clicking the links to these pages results in a "this page was not made available to students" pop-up.

I've told my colleague to use English for the titles of the pages until we find another solution.

Is there anything we can do to work around this issue, so that we can use the target language in the names of the pages instead of translating everything?

Does your "Pages" course navigation menu option have the crossed-out eye icon next to it, or are your students allowed to see the "Pages" course navigation menu?  If you have added content pages from the "Pages" index page to your "Modules" index page, are you making sure that the module that the content page is in is also published?  For example, if you had a module that was unpublished, and in that module you had a content page that was published...  in Student View, if the "Pages" course navigation menu item was visible to students, they could go to the "Pages" page and click on the name of that content page, but they would see a message similar to "This page is part of the module {MODULE NAME} and hasn't been unlocked yet."  Once you publish the module, that message would go away, and students could see the entire module or click on the name of the content item.

Hi @Chris_Hofer , thanks for the reply.

Those were actually the first things we tried. We added the published diary to a published module, and everything was visible except for that page. So when that did not work, we made the entire "Pages" index visible to students, and again, all pages were published and visible, except for the diary with the Arabic page title.

It's very strange, and we assume it has to do with the alphabet rather than the published/visibility settings. 🤷‍♀️

In addition to what @Chris_Hofer has stated, sometimes these types of situations are best solved by Canvas Support directly as they can look at the specifics of the course settings, setup, pages, student view, etc. Arabic is a supported language type and should be displaying as normal and not affecting student view:

We've finally managed to find the answer! And it was actually an extremely mundane one... 😑

The pages in question had all been accidentally set to "allow in mastery paths", which of course means they do not show up until they are linked to some form of mastery, which is not something used in that course. The fact that it had happened to only the Arabic pages (including the new ones we created) turned out to be nothing but pure coincidence.

I can't believe none of us noticed those little blue tick marks until now!
