Can you duplicate a rubric and then revise and save it as a new rubric?

Hello! You cannot necessarily duplicate a rubric, but you can add an existing rubric to an assignment. Then you can edit the title of the existing rubric that you chose and make any edits or customizations that you may need. I have included some information below that you might find helpful. The system will not let me fix a typo in my rubric - is there any way to do that?  I have significantly modified this and it has not yet been used so I don't understand why I cannot edit it.  Thanks for your help.

You should be able to edit it. If the rubric is applied to multiple assessments, the system will pop up a window telling you that you just cannot make any edit. as shown:

But you can still click on the OK button to continue, it will generate a new one with a different title. you can delete the old one attached to other assessments and use the new one instead.

This is a clever solution, but frustrating. If Canvas followed basic UI standards and/or consistent UI within its own app, I should be able to choose a Duplicate button for a rubric. Canvas is continually disappointing.

Totally agree.  Very frustrating and inconsistent that you can duplicate a Module, Assignment but not a Rubric. Especially when you use a Rubric for one Assignment, it's basically locked in time and you can't make any edits to it.

Bottom line, I'm trying to reuse Rubrics and I would love to create a basic template Rubric, but it seems like there is just no way to do that leaving us to manually create a rubric over and over again. Am I wrong?

Sadly, this answer is not a solution.

I want to duplicate a rubric in the same manner I can duplicate a Module or Page.

Canvas is lagging behind in so many helpful tools and functions.

I marked the response from @scott_hauert as a "Solution" because the video link he included does have a good process to duplicate rubrics via the Course Import Tool using the option to select specific content.  I agree, it's not the same as duplicating a module or a page in your course, but it's the next best thing.  So, I would encourage you to give this a try if you haven't already.  Good luck!

Again, I do understand that the process that Scott has shared is not exactly the same as making a copy of a module or a page, but it's what is available for the moment.  There is an existing Feature Idea that has been submitted called Ability to duplicate rubrics.  At this time, Feature Ideas are temporarily disabled until the beginning of February 2023 while Instructure does some work on the Feature Idea process (this includes creating, commenting on, and star rating Feature Ideas).  Once the Feature Idea process opens back up, then you'll be able to participate in the Feature Idea process again.  You can read more about this at Idea Conversations: The Path Forward.

Suppose my course has a rubric, titled "Exam-1," being used by one (or more) assignments.

In a new assignment, I add the "Exam-1" rubric, enter Edit mode, and rename the rubric to "Exam-2."

If I understand your explanation, the first rubric remains in place as "Exam-1" and I now have an exact copy of that rubric titled "Exam-2."  And moreover, any edits to the "Exam-2" rubric will not have any effect on assignments using the original Exam-1.  Is this correct?

From within your course, you can easily duplicate a rubric as many times as you need by simply importing that baseline rubric from that course into the same course and then renaming the duplicate.  You can do this repeatedly as long as you rename them.  When you import content from a Canvas course into itself (that is, import from the course into the same course), Canvas will warn you that the first copy will create a duplicate and subsequent copies will overwrite.  But as long as you rename the duplicates as you make them, there is no "collision" of names and you can just keep duplicating.  Here's a video that shows how I do it.

That is possible but seems like a lot of steps.  It would be a LOT simpler if you could easily have a drop down button like the assignments have that say "edit" "duplicate".  MUCH easier and less time consuming.

The solution isn't helpful if you're trying to make duplicates of rubrics on the account level.

Very disappointing that yet another task that should be simple is so difficult. I tried the "import" suggestion, and while it works - sort of - even that is not behaving as expected. I had one rubric, imported it, and renamed/edited it. Now I want several copies of both of these 2 rubrics. Silly me, thinking I could import both, then re-import all 4, then re-import all 8. Whenever I now try to import MULTIPLE rubrics, it is only duplicating the FIRST one again. I have to separately, individually, re-import the 2nd one to get a copy of it. So I guess if I want 20 or so rubrics when all is said and done, I have import each one separately.

It would be nice if the option of duplicating the Rubrics, similar to duplicating the discussions and assignments that are in a document format (it would be nice to duplicate quiz assignments as well). Instead of importing all the time to create new rubrics that are similar. Working smarter by using fewer steps is the most effective way. The more complicated the steps are, the more stressed out we are. 

Any chance Canvas will consider making the improvements in this area soon?
