Manually Created Users Password

If I create a user manually and don't assign a password, are they "up the creek" when they try to log-in or is there some default password they get assigned when their account is created?

 @kevinw ‌ as long as you have the email in there the student should be able to click on the forgot password option on the log in page and get an email where they can go in and set their own password.

Yes you would just have to look the manually created user up once you have created them and under the Login Information portion of the screen if you click on the pencil icon you will be able to set or update the password.

Clear directions. But that provision is not found when we click the pencil icon. Only three rows for LOG IN,SSID,INTEGRATION ID, not for password. How can we get this enabled?

Hi @Abdul_bmis,

In my experience, that would generally mean the login you're editing is tied to an SSO provider, not the internal Canvas login which you can set a password for.  It could also be a permissions issue, but I don't recall there being a granular permission just for password entry.

Thanks for the updates. However, I'm still confused about a few things. Here's what's been happening: I used to make user accounts manually or by using an import process. Lately, there have been problems with the passwords that I created manually. When I changed or created passwords for students, they had trouble logging in. Even after resetting the password, when they tried to log in from home, it still didn't work. The Canvas team fixed this problem by stopping admins from setting passwords. Now, when I create users, I can't find the section where I can set a password anymore.

I need this provision back because my students, especially the young ones, don't have access to email. We need to update and support them regularly. Is there a way we can find where this change was made or applied?

Hi Abdul,

Looking at the  Canvas Account Role Permissions - Instructure Community  document, it looks like the following three permissions for admin accounts are asociated with changing passwords:

• Users - Allow Administrative Actions in Courses
• Users - manage login details
• Users - view list

Someone with full admin rights would need to check and perhaps adjust the permissions that your specific role has been granted.  Sorry for any confusion on this, I was assuming you were a full root account admin, which I now think was an incorrect assumption to make.

You simply don't have permisison to set that in your canvas instance. This isn't a platform issue, rather a permissions mismatch between your expectation and what you've been granted. You'll need to follow this up with whomever supports your instance I suspect.

At this time I don't believe Canvas gives us a way to set a default password for any user created manually.  You'd have to go in and set the password up for every user that is manually created.

I am finding that I am getting users where I can only see the login, SISID and Integration ID.  This is new and does not apply to all users.  I am a top level admin on our Canvas instance so it's not permissions.  

I can't see anything obvious that would cause this discrepancy.  All the accounts it is happening on are manually created, but it is not happening on all manually created accounts.
