what does "use this rubric in assignment grading" do

I think I'm getting a feel for it, but I'm struggling generally with how rubrics work.

Am I right in thinking that this function puts the grades in Grades once the rubric is invoked? If I forget to check that box, how do I go back and check it now? (Classes haven't started yet, so no attempts or grades). How do I check whether I've checked the box or not?

Once you add the rubric to the assignment, you can always go back into the rubric and configure any of the options ... including "Use this rubric for assignment grading".

Thanks Chris, but that's not the experience I'm having.

For one thing, when I click on the edit pencil, I'm told that I can't edit this rubric because it is being used in more than one place. It is not. I have a different rubric for each assignment. I don't want to create another one just like this one; I want to use this one.

The link you attached tells me that "to edit an unused rubric or to select rubric settings" I should click the edit button. So is it that a rubric can't be used in more than one place or can't be used at all in order for it to be editable. It seems ridiculous to have to delete a rubric from an assignment so that it can be edited or even just checked for settings.

Hi @lglen2 ...

You absolutely can use the same rubric for two different assignments.  But, as you have seen, if the rubric is attached to two or more graded assignments, then you cannot use the pencil icon to edit the rubric (well, you can, but I believe it would create a new rubric based on the one you are editing).  You have to remove the rubric for all but one assignment.  Then you can edit the rubric.  Finally, you have to re-attach the rubric to those other assignments.  I agree...it is a clunky process...but that is how things currently work in Canvas.

Have you checked (and re-checked) every graded assignment in your course?  This would include regular assignments, graded discussions, and graded quizzes.  There's not a great way to determine where you might have attached the same rubric to another graded assignment, discussion, or quiz, unfortunately.

My experience is that you can't go back and check 'use this rubric for grading' once you have graded the first piece of work, unless something has changed recently ?
