Adversity can appear for any of us at any moment. The adversities we face do not define us, but the actions we take in the face of adversity do shape us. This week, I was reminded that actions during adversity do not just mold and shape individuals, but they also provide the opportunity to shape, and shine a light on, the communities of an individual.
This story of Community begins further back in the Twitter timeline—Beth Crook’s July 22nd tweet is where we are first introduced to the #stepsforbeth call to action.
If you have never had the chance to attend InstructureCon, you may not know how big of a request this was. InstructureCon has always had golf cart shuttles, but since the move to Keystone, CO, shuttle busses have been a necessity—for both distance and elevation (9,173′). Asking people, some of which are complete strangers, to walk more than they have to at 9,000’ elevation, is a mountain of an ask.
Despite the elements, when it came to supporting one of our own, distance and elevation were no match for the sense of caring in our Community. Prior to, and throughout the conference (July 25–27, 2017), the steps rolled in. Here are just a few highlights:
July 24th:
@KRogersSA - Today I did 8,618 #stepsforbeth - walking around #InstCon is prettier than riding in a shuttle!
@KonaRJones - It's been a busy start to #InstCon! Got in 13,229 #stepsforbeth and definitely earned the extra slice of pizza at dinner!
July 25th:
@poprox_conroy - It's 6pm and I've walked 8,604 #stepsforbeth ❤️
@KRogersSA - Second day at #InstCon for me and I did 14,766 #stepsforbeth.
July 26th:
@malapertmarc - 14,102 #stepsforbeth maybe I should have taken the shuttle bus.
@lindajeanlee - Last #InstCon day step total: 15,298 steps, 150% of my daily goal! #stepsforbeth
@aggal98 - 13,164 #stepsforbeth today. Loved every single one of them! #InstCon
@erinmmilne - Did 15,386 #stepsforbeth at #InstCon today!
July 27th:
@mjennings_uab - 13,668 #stepsforbeth on the last day of #instcon
@kblundstrum - 8,976 #stepsforbeth
July 28th:
@rseilham - 38,031 steps at #instcon #stepsforbeth
@AmyWard3086 - Thursday step count 16,478 #stepsforbeth #instcon
My non-scientific calculations captured over 400,000 steps logged for Beth this InstructureCon, and those were just the ones that were tweeted with the hashtag. The caring keeps rolling in… check out #stepsforbeth on Twitter.
@BethCrook , you’re an amazing woman, with a humble heart and genuine love for those around you! Today, in my own 12,889 steps for you, I reflected on how you turned your adversity into an opportunity to unite and build up the communities that surround and support you.
Thank you for this lesson in humanity!
:smileyinfo: Keep logging your steps, and encouraging one of our own! Tweet them, or add them as a comment to this thread! Beth, we look forward to following your progress!
Hi Beth:
As Renee said, "May the Panda Force be strong with you!"
I did it!! And then some! WOOT! Still a long road of recovery, but I'm on my feet now for short distances and wheelchair for long distances
Awesome!!! Congratulations!!
Wonderful, @BethCrook . SO happy for you!
I'm baaaaaack! Again. The first time back to work in Sept only lasted 3 days and then I went out on disability. But this week, I'm back! I have the wheelchair here for when I'm tired and walking with a cane short distances. I've successfully made it through the week! Can't wait to start diving back into some Canvas work next week!! I miss you all.
Still in PT 3x's a week. And waiting to get into the Transverse Myelitis Clinic at Johns Hopkins in January. Still a long road to recovery, but I'm not stopping. I'm NOT stopping! And #stepsforbeth conversations are still happening.
Thanks for the update, Beth. We all are rooting for you!
Yay! So happy to hear about your progress, Beth!
Being back to work - and even doing some walking - must feel great! So happy to hear of your progress!!
This is wonderful news, @BethCrook !
Hey @BethCrook , I did a thing and I took you with me in my mind. 222 flights of stepsforbeth. Check out the views we saw.
THANK YOU Adam!! Those views are breathtaking. I cannot wait until I can go hiking again. I head to Baltimore to meet with a medical team at Johns Hopkins on January 3rd to come up with my next plan and treatments. Keep "stepping" and your encouragement means more than you know!
Johns Hopkins is a great hospital and hopefully they'll put together a great plan for getting you back up and on your feet!
Yes @kona , JHMU has been GREAT. I'm so thankful that we are only 1.5-2 hours away. I'm actually headed there next week to the Kennedy Kreiger Institute for a week of rehab! Watch out y'all...my chatter on twitter is going to get real active next week. Need my cheering section back again!
Will be watching for you on Twitter!!
Spoke with medical team yesterday and asked their opinion of my condition and traveling to Keystone. They said I would need my wheelchair if I get tired and some way to get around if there’s multiple locations.
Does anyone know if there’s a place to rent a dedicated golf cart?
Hi Beth,
I let my fingers do the walking (on a trackpad) and called various clinics and drugstores and medical equipment rental places in the Summit County area. I finally found a Denver based business that will ship a scooter designed for environments like the area around Keystone. They will deliver it to the resort and rent it to you by the week or month. I actually didn't catch the business name but the number is 1-877-322-0101. The woman I spoke with seemed very nice.
Hope that helps,
SD
SCOTT!! Are you serious?! I'm serious blown away by this community. Each and every one of you. I'm still awaiting approval from the other 2 of the 4 in my medical team. And my boss. And need to decide who will be the lucky winner of being my travel buddy/hands & feet for while I'm out there. But I'm getting closer and closer to finalizing my decision I know what my head and heart are saying...but my stupid spine & legs act like they are important enough to offer some input.
Too cool for our school, Scott!
That R.O.C.K.s in the U.S.A!
This reminds me. One of our awesome community team members, @nathanatkinson discovered an app the other day that lets us all compete with steps on any device that we already use!
Check out Step and Fitness Tracker Challenges: Fitbit, Jawbone, Garmin & Android and let us know if you want to do a Community InstCon challenge?? We can totally #stepsforbeth2.0
That would be SO much fun!
@BethCrook ,
I'm glad to hear that Johns Hopkins has helped you with your condition. My sister-in-law went a few months before receiving her diagnosis of transverse myelitis, so her recovery has been slow.
Crystal
Crystal, YES! It's the best place indeed. I originally went there with TM and Dr. Pardo told me I had spinal stroke instead. TM and my condition look completely the same in recovery and on-going symptoms. I'll be rooting your sis-in-law on!! Is she going there for rehab now?
Thanks, @BethCrook . We live in Idaho, so my sister-in-law is not being treated at Johns Hopkins. In fact, she has Type I diabetes as well, and no medical insurance, so thoughts and prayers are welcomed from all! ~ Crystal
Y'all....I got approval!!! Well 2 out of 4 of my medical team and my boss. With restrictions (i.e. wheelchair and must travel with someone who can assist me...family/friends are going to have to draw straws for this one). So if I bring someone to help me, and I pay for the "spouse/extra person" rate, would that person be allowed to attend some of the conference workshops, etc with me if I'm having a hard time? Or does that person need a full registration?
@BethCrook , this is fantastic news! :smileyblush::smileycool::smileygrin:
(<=all the emojis here)
With regard to your companion, Deactivated user is going to coordinate this directly with you.
Yay!!!! So excited that things seem to be coming together for you to attend this year!
Ironically, John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is stuck in my head this morning. Maybe that's a sign that I should start booking reservations?
YES!!! 🙂
Hey y'all, look what I just posted https://community.canvaslms.com/community/instcon/instructurecon-2018/blog/2018/06/26/panda-stepsfor...
Catch me if you can!
Just revisited this today. I'm not crying. Okay, I am. Wow, just wow. ❤️
