Summary
The Participation menu includes an option to select course dates by term or course.
Change Benefit
This change offers clarification for how student participation is managed for a course.
Affected User Roles
Instructors
When an instructor views the Participation section in the Course Settings page, the Participation section displays a menu that defaults to Term dates for new courses. This option sets student course participation to the start and end dates defined for the term.
If preferred, instructors can change course participation to the Course option, where course participation is limited to the course start and end dates, which can be added in the course. Course dates override term dates; however, section dates that exist in the course override course dates.
Course dates default to midnight. If the course is set to end at midnight, the page displays a warning icon.
The Participation option is retained when the Course Settings page is updated.
Notes:
- The options to restrict students from viewing the course after the end date and before the start date have not been affected.
-
Existing courses will be set by existing dates. If a course includes custom course dates and the participation checkbox is selected, the new Participation checkbox will be set to the Course option. However, if the participation checkbox in the old interface was not selected to override term dates—even if custom start and end dates were included—the new Participation checkbox will be set to the Term option.

Permissions: Course Files and Users (2021-03-20 Canvas Release) |
Summary
The Course Files - add / edit / delete permission has been grouped into three separate permissions.
Change Benefit
This change provides granularity among the three options to manage course files. This update does not affect Canvas APIs.
Affected User Roles
Admins
The Course Files add, edit, and delete permissions are grouped in the permissions list as the Manage Course Files permission.
As with other permissions, the row displays icons that represent the permission status for the user role. All three permissions within the group can be managed together by clicking the main icon for the user role.
To manage individual permissions within the group, the group can be expanded. Each granular permission that is enabled includes a check mark. Individual permissions for the group can be managed by selecting or deselecting the relevant permission. When the permission includes a mix of enabled and disabled permissions, the main permission status indicates the permission is partially enabled, using a half-filled green circle as the icon.
Course Files - add: add course files
Course Files - delete: delete course files
Course Files - edit: edit course files
Individual permissions for a user role can be changed to the full enabled or disabled state at any time by changing the status for the main permission.

Permissions: Course Files and Users (2021-03-20 Canvas Release) |
Summary
The Add/Remove Teachers, Designers, TAs permission and the Add/Remove Students permission have been reorganized into individual user permissions.
Change Benefit
This change provides granularity among the options to manage users. This update does not affect Canvas APIs.
Affected User Roles
Admins
Note: The beta environment does not reflect how permissions will be updated in the production environment. As part of the production deploy, Canvas engineers will generate a backend migration to match existing user permissions with the granular permissions. This migration was not done in the beta environment.
The Add/Remove Teachers, Designers, TAs permission and the Add/Remove Students permission have been renamed as Users - Allow Administrative Actions and Users - Manage Students in Course, respectively.
Additionally, the functionality to add and remove users has been reorganized into individual user permissions:
Users - Designers
Users - Observers
Users - Students
Users - TAs
Users - Teachers
Note: For account roles, the Users - add / remove observers permission is not affected by this change, as that permission manages observer enrollments at the account level.
As with other permissions, the row displays icons that represent the permission status for the user role. All permissions within the group can be managed together by clicking the main icon for the user role.
Users Permissions
To manage individual permissions within the group, the group can be expanded. Each granular permission that is enabled includes a check mark. Individual permissions for the group can be managed by selecting or deselecting the relevant permission. When the permission includes a mix of enabled and disabled permissions, the main permission status indicates the permission is partially enabled, using a half-filled green circle as the icon.
Users - Designers: Add / Remove in courses
Users - Observers: Add / Remove in courses
Users - Students: Add / Remove in courses
Users - TAs: Add / Remove in courses
Users - Teachers: Add / Remove in courses
Individual permissions for a user role can be changed to the full enabled or disabled state at any time by changing the status for the main permission.
Users - Allow Administrative Actions
The Add / Remove Teachers, Designers, and TAs permission has been renamed to Users - allow administrative actions in courses. This permission manages administrative functionality for all user roles except students. By default, the Teacher and Student TA roles can manage this permission.
This permission includes all existing functionality except for adding or removing users:
- Allows user to view login ID information for users in the course
- Allows user to view the People page settings menu for users
- Allows user to view details for users in the course
- Allows user to limit students to only view fellow section members
Users - Manage Students in Courses
The Users - add / remove students permission has been renamed to Users - manage students in courses. This permission manages administrative functionality for students. By default, the Teacher and Student TA roles can manage this permission.
This permission includes all existing functionality except for adding or removing students:
- Allows user to view login ID information for students.
- Allows user to view prior enrollments.
- Allows user to access a user’s settings menu and user details.
- Allows user to edit a student’s section or role.
- Allows user to resend course invitations from the Course People page.

SpeedGrader: Submission Reassignments (2021-03-20 Canvas Release) |
Summary
In SpeedGrader, instructors can reassign an assignment with a due date to an individual student and ask them to redo their submission.
Change Benefit
This change allows instructors to provide feedback and reassign an assignment to an individual student, which places the assignment back in the List View Dashboard as another assignment to complete.
Affected User Roles & Behaviors
Instructors
For online assignments with a due date, instructors can view a Reassign button in SpeedGrader. If they require a student to redo an assignment, they can reassign the assignment directly to the student from within their grading workflow in SpeedGrader. The instructor must first provide feedback regarding the assignment, which will enable the button. The reassignment does not change the original due date for the student.
Notes
- The Reassign Assignment button is not available for External Tools (LTI), on paper, and no submission assignments.
- The Reassign Assignment button is only available for assignments with due dates.
- If an instructor returns to SpeedGrader after navigating away from the page, the Reassign Assignment button shows that the assignment has been reassigned.
- If the assignment's settings do not allow students to make an additional attempt, the Reassign Assignment shows that the assignment is not able to be reassigned.
Students
When an assignment is reassigned, students see the assignment in the List View Dashboard with the instructor’s feedback. Students can resubmit the assignment and submit for additional feedback from their instructor.

Summary
LaTeX equations can be entered in any Canvas text field, and MathJax is loaded if Canvas detects an equation image added by delimited LaTeX characters.
Change Benefit
This change allows users to use equations in more areas of Canvas and manage equations more efficiently.
Affected User Roles
All Users
LaTeX equations can be added in any text field in Canvas and are typeset or processed by MathJax. Equations can be added through manual entry, or through the Equation editor as supported in the Rich Content Editor.
Manually Entered Equations
Equations can be added manually in any Canvas area that includes a text field, such as the title of an assignment or in a calendar event. Manual entries must be formatted according to LaTeX specifications. For help using the LaTeX Editor, please see the Canvas Equation Editor Advanced PDF.
Text fields support MathJax $$ or /( delimiters to identify equations. Adding equations added in a \(...\) format indicates the equation should be in an inline format. Generally, equations entered with text should be formatted inline. However, an equation in a $$...$$ format indicates the equation should be in a block format.
Inline Example:
\(area = \int_{a}^b f(x)dx\)
Block Example:
$$y = mx + b$$
When saved, MathJax renders the LaTeX equations in the editor window as inline and block text, respectively.

Summary
The Gradebook View menu includes the View Ungraded as 0 option, which is a visual change only and does not affect any grades.
Change Benefit
This change aligns parity with the Individual View Gradebook and provides instructors with a visual change in identifying grading calculations for ungraded assignments.
Affected User Roles
Instructors
When this feature is enabled for an account, the View menu includes the View Ungraded as 0 option, which allows instructors to view student grades as if all ungraded assignments were worth zero points. This setting also persists for the Individual View Gradebook.
Each time the View Ungraded as 0 setting is selected, the Gradebook displays a window explaining the details about the setting. The user must agree to the details before the setting can be used.
This setting only affects the user’s view of student grades and displays grades as if all ungraded assignments were given a score of zero. This setting is a visual change only and does not affect grades for students or other users of the Gradebook. When the setting is enabled, Canvas will not populate zeros in the Gradebook for student submissions within individual assignments. Only the assignment groups and total columns will automatically factor in all scores of zero into the overall percentages for each student.
When selected in the Gradebook, the View Ungraded as 0 option displays as a heading in all assignment group columns and the total column to indicate this feature is turned on in the Gradebook. This feature also includes grading periods, if used for a course.
Enabling this option has no effect outside of the Gradebook; students cannot see any difference in their grade pages. Similarly, TAs or other instructors in the course will not see any change in their view of the Gradebook. Only the user who enables this option in the Gradebook will see the affected grades.
Note: This feature affects the configuration of the Total Column in the Gradebook, which also applies to CSV Exports. The CSV file displays columns for the Current and Final scores: the Current score reflects the total while ignoring unsubmitted assignments (option disabled), and the Final score counts unsubmitted assignments as zero (option enabled).

Summary
The Rich Content Editor (RCE) supports the pasting and drag and drop of content. Users can copy and paste an image from a browser or photo viewing app in the RCE. Also, users can copy an image, audio, or video file from a file system directory viewer such as the macOS Finder or Windows File Explorer and paste it in the RCE. Additionally, users can drag a file from the local filesystem and drop it in the RCE. If a course or group requires usage rights, when pasting a file in the RCE, the File Upload modal displays to select usage rights before uploading and displaying in the RCE. When dragging and dropping an image from the web, an HTML IMG tag referencing the file at its location on the web is inserted into the RCE. This may or may not display the image for other users depending on the public visibility of the source image.
Change Benefit
This update provides users with additional options when adding content to the Rich Content Editor.
Additional Details
Due to the security features in browsers, using the RCE Edit menu Paste link continues to display a pop-up alert. Pasting content requires the Command+V, Control+V or Paste from the browser’s context menu.

Summary
The Create Course window may display an option to select a subaccount.
Change Benefit
This change allows admins to manage whether manually created courses can be placed in a subaccount other than the Manually-Created Courses subaccount.
Feature Workflow
In Account Settings, the Who Can Create New Courses section has been updated to include two course creation options. When a user role is allowed to create courses, the default is option is to allow that role to add a course to any subaccount where the user has active enrollments. However, this option can be changed to restrict course creation only in the Manually Created Courses subaccount.
If the Student checkbox is selected, the same options apply.
Note: For Teachers enrolled in Canvas for Elementary courses, teachers can always select a subaccount when creating new courses, regardless of the account setting.
For users who are allowed to create a course, the Start a New Course button displays in the Dashboard. Selecting this button opens the window to create a new course, which includes an interface update.
If the option to create a course anywhere is selected, the Account drop-down menu is included in the window. Otherwise, only the Course Name field is visible.
Course content license and course visibility options are no longer displayed in the window, as both are set to private by default. If necessary, both of these options can be changed in Course Settings.
A course code will also automatically be created based on the first string of connected characters in the course name. For users with permission, the course code can be changed in Course Settings.
Additional Details
In Account Settings, admins can specify which types of users can create new courses:
- Teachers
- Students
- Users with no enrollments
By default, admins can always create courses.

Summary
The Account and Course Settings tabs support independent URL references.
Change Benefit
This change allows users to remain in a specific tab after a Settings page is refreshed.
