What are Announcements?

What are Announcements?

Announcements allow instructors to communicate with students about course activities and post interesting course-related topics. Announcements are designed to allow instructors to broadcast information out to all members of a course or to all members of sections within a course. Students may be able to reply to announcements, but replies are not considered to be a conversation and do not appear in the Conversations Inbox.

Announcements are used to communicate with students about the logistics of your course. As soon as you have created an Announcement, Canvas takes care of notifying students according to their preferred Notification Preferences.

In Canvas, you have the option of feeding posts from your blog or other information sources directly into your Announcements page using RSS. RSS feeds can be filtered by keyword to prevent irrelevant content from entering the course. Students who use RSS readers can subscribe to course Announcements outside of Canvas.

Note: You can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate individual announcements. To view a window with a list of keyboard navigation shortcuts, press Alt+F8 (on a PC keyboard) or Option+Fn+F8 (on a Mac keyboard) simultaneously on your keyboard.

When would I use Announcements?

When would I use Announcements?

Use Announcements to:

  • Remind your students what they need to accomplish to stay on track.
  • Point students to internal and external resources that will help them achieve course Outcomes.
  • Leave a message for the entire class with video or audio comments.
  • Celebrate student success and important events that may be of interest to your students.
  • Feed a custom RSS feed related to the topic of the course to your students.
  • Automatically share blog posts written by your students on Wordpress, Blogger, etc. with custom RSS feeds.

Hi All!

***the deadline for changes in credit hours is tomorrow (Tuesday the 8th) at 5 PM!!!

First, and importantly - make sure you are registered for the correct number of credit hours for this semester. Check with your advisor if you are aren't sure.

Typically Music Majors sign up for 2 credit hours, Music Management Majors sign up for 1 credit hour.

In the past, the default has been just 1 credit hour!

Thanks for taking care of this.

Is it possible to set up announcements so that they are emailed to all students in a class? I would like to keep important information available to them online, but also need to make sure that they receive it in a timely fashion. Last week, I sent out two announcements (assuming that they DID go out by email) and was chagrined to find out that no one received them. I have since had to send out other emails, and am thinking it seems like a waste of my time to have to copy everything into separate announcements. Thanks.

@tromba119,

Thanks for adding your comment! It seems that you might've intended your comment for a class announcement. If that's the case, you'll need to login to your school's Canvas website and create an announcement from your course. For more information, check out this lesson.

@lburnham,

In Canvas, email notifications are based on preferences set at the user level. To ensure they receive these notifications, you will need to instruct your students to set these preferences at the course or user level.

Hi @CanvasDocTeam

Are there technical requirements for announcements to work?  For example, does a course need to be published for announcements to be sent?  (In the case of faculty developing a course and wanting to let  students know something before the course "goes live".)

Or if an announcement is sent after someone has been invited, but the invite has not been accepted?

Or if the course is published but an announcement is sent before the course begin date?

I've had complaints from faculty that announcements aren't being received by students.  I have checked student notification settings.

Thanks.

Hi @amilne,

Thanks for posting your question! If you check the notes in the description of this guide, you'll see that yes, a course must be published before students can receive announcement notifications: How do I add an announcement in a course?

If a student has not accepted a course invitation, they will not receive course notifications.

You can check the Student Course Visibility and Participation flowchart for more information about allowing students to view and participate in a course before course dates.

Hopefully this helps! Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

Allie
