Ideas: Archiving Anew

17 11 1,707

Next week we will archive our first batch of ideas since the beginning of 2017. When we relaunched the evolved feature idea process we took a calculated guess that ideas in the top 10th percentile would be retained.  We’re actually going to retain the top 17th percentile of ideas that opened for voting in March 2017.  Here’s how we came to that number.

  • 439 Ideas opened for voting throughout March 2017.

  • 24 of the ideas are directly related to Canvas Studio priorities.
  • 46 ideas constitute roughly 10%, so we're retaining the top 46.
  • 381 ideas will be archived and moved to Cold Storage, a repository of archived ideas.

Archiving ideas helps all of us to gauge what’s particularly important in a six-month window of time, and makes room for new ideas.  You can read more about archiving, resubmissions, and Cold Storage in How does the feature idea process work?. You can also find more information about how ideas impact the overall development process in What is the feature development process for Canvas?

Your ideas, use cases, and votes are always important to us.  Thank you for the thought and energy you put into helping us make Canvas even more awesome!

Thanks for the update,‌! I'm not quite sure I understand what the vote threshold is (from the graphic, it looks like 96 votes is the cutoff?) and which ideas are being archived: do you mean all the ideas from January through March...? or all the ideas from March until now?

Anyway, I hope this does not mean the Missing label items will be archived; they were created relatively recently, and voting is scattered across different repetitions of the same idea, but none of them have yet reached your 96 votes (if I understand the threshold correctly). There are three separate submissions of the same basic idea:

Speaking of‌ - I joined it because I find it valuable to have the full history of what changes folks have asked for (especially since we're pretty much old-timers at this point, and a lot of that history is ours). But I catch myself linking to those archived ideas when responding to new requests. So, two questions:

1. Should we avoid mentioning archived ideas as we question and clarify and add our support to new feature ideas?

2. Can we make the "Archived" label bigger or bolder or red or something, so those of us who do belong to Cold Storage and gets those archived ideas in our search results don't mistake them for current/live ideas?

laurakgibbs‌, we revamped and relaunched Canvas Studio‌ in March 2017, so right now we're only archiving the ideas that opened for voting during the month of March (those are the ideas expressed by the graphic). A month from now, we'll move on to assessing the six-month vote totals for ideas that opened in April, then in May, and so on.

(that was my huge sigh of relief)

Thank you for the clarification!

Lamplighter‌, thanks for asking this, and it's a great question. Some people find the archived ideas that are now residing in Cold Storage‌ helpful when formulating their own ideas. We would suggest that if you decide to link to ideas that are in Cold Storage, also mention that anyone wanting to view those links will have to join that group.

And you've wisely brought up the point that once you've joined that group, archived ideas are going to appear in your search results. That said, while it would be great to be able to change the innate functionality of the Jive platform, making the "Archived' label bigger or bolder isn't a piece of the interface over which we have any control.

Does Jive accept feature ideas? Smiley Wink

The company has an ideation process; please read about the recent developments with the platform for context.

Will there be a list of the 439 ideas and their status? Will there be timelines for the ideas that move forward?

You'll always be able to find the archived ideas in‌.  They're never deleted, and in the event that they do become part of a larger project they will be moved out of archive and Cold Storage.

For the ideas that remain in‌, they will receive status updates as they are available.

There are lots of ideas in cold storage now, I think what I want to see I'm asking for the list of the 439 ideas than were opened to votes submitted since the start of 2017....and since I'm thinking of it, what of the the ideas prior to this time frame? What will become of them?

John. Here is a list of all ideas included in the 439

And, provided in the blog above, here are links to those that are in different stages.  (Product Radar. In Development, Complete).

Ideas prior to this timeframe have already been sorted (retained/archived).  You can find more about the process we went through there in the following blogs.
