How do I use the isUnit mathematical scoring method when creating a math item?

When you create a math item in Mastery Connect, you can select one of the available mathematical scoring methods. The isUnit scoring method checks that the expression entered by a student uses the correct units. For example, if the correct answer is given in meters, a student's response must be in meters. Refer to additional examples below.

Notes:

  • The isUnit scoring method works with decimals, fractions, variables, and percentages.
  • The isUnit scoring method works with trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential expressions.
  • You can combine the isUnit scoring method with other scoring methods, such as the equivValue scoring method.

In the Set correct answer(s) section, enter a point value for the item in the Point(s) text box [1].

Click the Method drop-down menu, and select the isUnit option [2].

Enter Correct Answer

Enter Correct Answer

Enter a correct answer into the Value field.

A student response is scored as correct only if it includes the units that appear in the Value field. For example, if the correct answer entered into the Value field is 4in, a student response is correct if it is anything involving the unit in. If a student response is ft or m or any expression using other units, the response is scored as correct.

By default, parentheses that are not mathematically required are ignored. For example, if the correct answer is set to 5m, a student response of (5m) is scored as correct.

By default, zeros before a decimal point are allowed even if they are not specified in the correct answer. For example, if the correct answer is set to 4in, a student response of 0.4in is scored as correct.

Allow Different Separators

Allow Different Separators

By default, a dot is allowed as a decimal value separator and a comma is allowed as a thousands separator. To allow different separators in student responses, click the Allow decimal marks checkbox [1].

To specify a decimal separator, click the Decimal separator menu [2], and select the Dot or Comma option.

To specify a type of separator for thousands, click the Thousands separator drop-down menu [3], and select the Dot, Comma, or Space option.

Note: You cannot select the same option for both the Decimal separator and the Thousands separator. For example, you cannot select Dot for both.

Examples

Any student response that uses the same units as the correct answer is scored as correct. Otherwise, it is scored as incorrect.

  • If the correct answer is 3in, a student response of 3in, 5in, 20in, or 4.5xin + yin is scored as correct with the isUnit scoring method.
  • If the correct answer is 1000m, a student response of 1km is scored as incorrect with the isUnit scoring method.

You can combine the isUnit scoring method with other scoring methods such as the equivValue scoring method. For example, if you set the correct answer to 4m using the equivValue method, a student response of 400cm is scored as correct. But if you add the isUnit method, a student response of 400cm is scored as incorrect. Although the response is symbolically equivalent to the correct answer, it is not in the same units as the correct answer.
