How do I import questions from a QTI package into an item bank in New Quizzes?

How do I import questions from a QTI package into an item bank in New Quizzes?

You can import questions from a QTI package into an item bank. This lesson describes how to add a QTI package to an item bank by creating a new item bank. You can also add a QTI package to an empty item bank that has already been created.

Notes:

  • New Quizzes only supports imports from QTI 1.2 and 2.x.
  • You can only import questions if you access item banks from the Manage Item Banks page in the Options menu. If you click the Item Banks button, you will not be able to import questions.

I don't have the option to import a bank. What am I missing?

Hi @vtlizzard,

The option to import will only display if you access item banks from the Manage Item Banks page in the Options menu (see the Manage Item Banks step). If you click the Item Banks button, you will not be able to import questions. After accessing the via the Options menu, make sure you haven't added any new questions to the new bank prior to importing. If you have any further questions, please reach out.

Naomi

Thank Naomi,

I got it to import, but then when I open the quiz as a "new" quiz the imported bank is not there. It is in the manage item bank list but not available for use in the new quiz. The only way I can make it work is to do an old quiz, migrate to new, then manually add each question. It would be faster to retype everything!!

Hi @vtlizzard,

So just to clarify, you were able to get the item bank imported (using the steps above) and would like to view those questions in a New Quizzes assessment? If so, you can open the applicable New Quizzes assessment (or create a new one, if you don't have one yet) and import questions from the item bank. You can choose to import questions individually or import all questions or a random set from the item bank. If that's not quite it or if you have any further questions, let us know and we'll do what we can to help.

Naomi

I could only use the imported banks with the old quiz format. They did not appear in the banks for the new quiz format. I had to create a quiz in the old format, then migrate to the new to use the banks. I was able to do it, but it was a very awkward system. Anyway, I'm now done and I hope this gets fixed for next time.

What is a QTI?

@tommy_flynn QTI is a standard format for quiz files.  You can read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QTI

Thank you @Renee_Carney. Now that I know what it is, how can create a QTI file for the item banks I have saved?

@tommy_flynn I believe you're asking about exporting from a Canvas course (bank).  If so, How do I export quiz content from a course? - Canvas Community provides directions.

@Renee_Carney, thank you for responding. However, I am asking if there is a way to upload a large number of items from my computer documents. I have them in several Microsoft Word and RTF files. Thanks.

I had the same problem as @vtlizzard in creating a quiz bank -- no ability to import in the new quiz format. The screenshots above do not match what I see and, apparently, what @vtlizzard saw.

When I tried to follow her route of migrating from classic to new quiz, I received an alert that the bank exceeded the limit, with no indication of the numerical limit.

I have 11 quizzes with question banks of 25-45 questions. Importing them one by one is not practical. Questions:

1) What is the cause or are the causes of an exceeded-import-limit message?

2) When can we expect a fix to the new quizzes so that they work in the way described above?

3) With whom can I schedule a quick lesson on how to make the new-quiz system accomplish the course needs?

Thank you.

@HugoOtt  Yes, exactly!! I thought I was losing my mind!!

@vtlizzard. I am now taking the long way:

1) Creating a Classic quiz.

2) Hand-selecting the questions from the pool and importing them. It appears I can select at least 25.

3) Not using pool option because it doesn't appear to exist in Classic. I exceeded an unknown limit in New with 36.

3) Migrating the quiz to New. Not sure why I should do that.

4) Entering the number of attempts and other options in New and again when editing the quiz in the Quizzes list. Not sure why that choice appears twice.

5) In the Quiz view, adding due, open and close dates. Not sure why this is unavailable inside New quizzes.

6) Looking forward to guidance on a better way.

@HugoOtt Slow, but sure. That is what I finally had to do. It was so tedious! Hang in there!

@tommy_flynn,

If you have access to Respondus, you can take a look at this question or this question for some information on transferring Microsoft quizzes into Canvas.

Cody

I do not have any Microsoft quizzes. Please see my original comments below, and please respond to them: them:

Hi @HugoOtt,

Seems like the best course of action for you would be to access this portal, where you can connect with a support agent and report error messages. This might also be a good route to take with your third question to see what training options are available.

I keep getting an error message for some reason. My file type is a QTI 1.2. Is there a way to fix this?

Hi @germank,

Are you able to view the error details listed in the error message?

Naomi

Hi @germank,

Thanks for providing that screenshot! That's very strange. New Quizzes supports imports from QTI 1.2 and 2.x, so importing a QTI 1.2 shouldn't display an unsupported QTI error. Could you create a ticket with Canvas Support? They can look at your specific Canvas instance and help troubleshoot possible causes and solutions to this error.
