How do I remove an enrollment from a course?

You may be able to remove an enrollment in your course within your course Settings in Canvas. Removing an enrollment deletes the enrollment from your account, but admins can view these enrollments as deleted enrollments in account-level reports. Users removed from a course do not have any record of participation in the course. You may want to conclude or deactivate the enrollment instead.

To see course participation for a deleted enrollment as compared to other enrollment types, view the Canvas Enrollment Status Comparison PDF.

Notes:

  • Removing enrollments is a course permission. If you cannot remove enrollments in your course, your institution has restricted this feature.
  • Enrollments may be added by your institution's student information system (SIS). If an enrollment is created via SIS, only admins can remove an enrollment from the course.

How do I remove a teacher from a course?  There are no dots on the side of their name, there is no drop down menu.

@smith6,

If you're not able to remove a teacher from a course, there could be a couple things going on: 1) removing enrollments is a course permission. If you cannot remove enrollments in your course, your institution may have restricted this feature. 2) If your institution added enrollments using a student information system (SIS), only an admin can remove an enrollment from the course.

Hi @smith6,

I wanted to follow up with you and make sure we answered your question. If you still have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Otherwise, if this has been resolved, no further action on your part is needed. This thread will be archived in several weeks.

It would be really helpful to have this info in the permissions matrix 😇:

"Enrollments may be added by your institution's student information system (SIS). If an enrollment is created via SIS, only admins can remove an enrollment from the course."

Hi @milesl,

Thanks for the feedback. Could you give us a little more information on what you mean by permissions matrix? Are you referring to the permissions page in the Canvas UI? Or our permissions documentation in the Community?

Cody

@CanvasDocTeam Hi Cody! I was referring to this page, preferably under "what it does" or "additional considerations"

But I would hope that permission details were consistent across all documentation, so it would be helpful to add it to other docs like this one: https://s3.amazonaws.com/tr-learncanvas/docs/Canvas_Permissions_Account.pdf

How can I remove more than 1 student at a time from my course...1300 students were added to my course from all over our school district. It is taking forever to remove them 1 at a time because when I remove them i have to scroll back down to were I was  to keep going...

this is very frustrating.

Thanks @milesl,

I can absolutely add this to the PDF you linked and will pass it along to those who oversee the the UI updates. (Apologies for the late response. Holiday weekend + massive windstorm locally made my week get started a little slowly.)

Cody

@sherril1_bradey,

I would recommend reaching out to your district to see if they can help correct this error.
