How do I add an assignment using an external app?

How do I add an assignment using an external app?

When you create an assignment, you can choose to add an external app (LTI tool) as a submission type. External apps must be added in your course before they can be added to an assignment.

Notes:

  • The External Tool submission type does not support group assignments or peer reviews.
  • Grade passback from external applications (LTI tools) to the Canvas Gradebook is not restricted by course start dates. When students have access to a course before a course start date, they can participate in assignments using some external applications (LTI tools), and grades for those assignments will populate the Gradebook.

Comments

This seems to assign an entire LTI external tool rather than a deep link to a resource within that LTI external tool. Is it possible to instead select an LTI deep link resource that has already been added to the course through a cartridge? Alternatively, could this tool initiate an LTI Content Item Selection Request so the teacher can browse the external content provider's resources, select an appropriate assessment, and then return with a deep link to that assessment?

UPDATE: After some searching, I found that it is possible to configure the external tool to use an LTI deep link and force the assignment selector to act as a placement for the deep link operation. Here are links to the instructions on how to make this work:
