How do I enable a grading scheme for a course?

How do I enable a grading scheme for a course?

You can enable an existing grading scheme for your course by editing your Course Settings. If you need to change your course grading scheme at any time, you can manage the grading schemes and find a new scheme.

If you want to disable grading schemes for your entire course, you can deselect the grading scheme checkbox in Course Settings and your course will no longer be associated with a grading scheme. If you choose to use a grading scheme at a later time, you will have to re-enable a grading scheme.

Notes:

  • In a course export, the enabled course grading scheme is copied as the default grading scheme.
  • Using an account-level grading scheme built by your institution links the scheme into your course—it does not import as a new scheme on the course level.

I have set up my grade sync.

Why is an Account-level grading scheme set up for a Blueprint master course not automatically enabled in the "associated" sections?

Hi @smathews

Thanks for the question! As I understand it, blueprint courses sync course content rather than acting as a course import from the master course into the associated courses. When you import course content from one Canvas course into another, course settings are also imported (unless you select otherwise).

This distinction for blueprint courses allows instructors to make decisions about their course procedures and expectations while also allowing them to utilize prescribed course materials.

Hopefully this answers your question. If you have any further questions, or if my teammates and I can clarify anything else related to Canvas functionality, please let us know.

Thanks,

Allie

Thanks, Allie @CanvasDocTeam , but the Course Dates are in Settings and those sync to the "Associated Courses" in a Blueprint course, right?

Why not the chosen Grading Scheme in the Blueprint, too? We had an instance of "syncing" courses to a master blueprint and the Grading Scheme enabled in the blueprint did not automatically become enabled following the sync. The Canvas default scheme was enabled instead; so we had to manually change the Grading Scheme in each associated course to the one already enabled in the blueprint master.

Perhaps I did not check "include Settings" in the sync, but does it have to do with this note at the top of this guide (?):

  • Using an account-level grading scheme built by your institution links the scheme into your course—it does not import as a new scheme on the course level.

Hi @smathews

When I reached out to our Canvas experts for further clarification, Canvas Support requested that you file a report. They'll look into this question with you and find a solution and answers.

Thanks,
